On the route speed 'trap' areas..

Dear All, I wont be racing down there but... is there any well known speed trap areas to look out for?

Everywhere, From Boulogne-sur-mer Paige to Le Mans.

The french speed traps could be everywhere but over the last few years i have seen less on the old roads and heard more reports of them appearing to target the motorways, makes sense really as those in a hurry are more likely to use those roads.

I have asked the gendarmes this year to all go on holiday and to declare all roads to Le Mans an unofficial race circuit. There, that's settled

On a serious note, if you are coming via Cherbourg or Caen this scenic route is usually plod free and has loads of bars and restaurants, and if you are arriving early I would recommend the Lion Verd at Putanges Pont Ecrepin as a good stop. Same for lunch/dinner on the return trip too.

So, Falaise, Putanges Pont Ecrepin, Ranes, Carrouges, Pré-en-Pail, Villaines-la-Juhel, Courcité, Sillé-le-Guillaume, then St. Saturnin for the Friday meet, and then Le Mans. It really is a good route that I've used for over 20 years and never seen the BiB, and you can really enjoy the villages with people waving etc.

Second that, they usually hang out in the same places each year, and if I recall around 90 minutes out from Le Mans. So if you use the Auto Route, take the second halfof your journey with caution, as by the time you see the man with the Laser Gun, it's probably too late.

Yep, their crafty buggers. The plus side is the French are more likely to flash their lights to warn you. We took the non-motorway route back last year and still saw one or two out to get people.

You can see them sitting with their eye spy books of sportscars ticking them off, the first one with a full house gets an extra week's holiday.

There's this big bit of land between Spain in the south, and some water in the North. Once you cross the watery bit in the North to the big bit of land you will find the police.

They pop up everywhere, especially from behind the over-road bridges.

Resist the temptation to push too far beyond 80mph on the unrestricted areas of autoroute and you will be fine. 80 mph leaving the ferry/tunnel might not be overly sensible.

Oh and don't drink and drive. They will not find that amusing either.

This... Also, the traps are likely to be in obvious places such as the entrance to a town/village or at the bottom of a big hill on the the autoroute or a mile or so from a tollbooth (so they can nab you when you stop to pay)

If you hit the Autoroute from Calaise all the way to Le Mans, like the vast majority or people you will see loads of police. If you take a little longer and work the, generally excellent condition and empty back roads you probably won't see any.
