Fade Edges

I'm currently trying to make an order of service for a funeral and they have requested that the edges of the picture on the front has a nice oval edge fade/feathering type thing.
I'm doing it in word and don't have any fancy photo software but I thought this was possible. However after selecting almost every button in the damn program I can't do it!!
Is there a way?

You need to 'vignette' it ... not sure if Word can do that. Check out HELP

I think that's turning it to dark towards the edges.

Photochop calls it feathering and will turn it to what ever colour is underneath.

I think you can with Word 2007, but probably not with previous versions.

Lois, these instructions are for Word 2007. You can do what you want, but perhaps not in the way you want to.

• Click the "Insert" tab, click "Picture"
• Browse to the picture you want and choose it
• Click on the "Picture Tools" contextual tab that has appeared in the title bar
• In the Picture Styles group, expand the Picture Effects drop down and choose "Soft edges"; choose one that suits you. 25 point is a good starting place
• From the Page Layout tab, choose Page Colour and make it black

ETA: Just read that you're on Word 2002. I'll see if the GIMP can do it. Paint.NET certainly can't.

You can do it in the GIMP with a great deal of farting about.

Alternatively, I can do it properly in Lightroom in about 10 seconds.
