Looking for a CLS 63 (W219)
Discussion
Hey all,
Im looking to get some uberbarge to waft the family about in so im looking to plonk myself into a 63 W219, not dismissing the 55 but id rather get the 63 naturally as im a bloke.
Just wondering if anyone here is running or had one and if they were happy with it, or any advice on what to look for? Im not looking to get one for another 3 months so i can be patient and buy on condition but id like to know how they are with the electronics, i'll be new to Mercedes and i always had the impression there electronics were iffy (probably unjust assumption)
Cheers

I've had my 07 CLS63 for just over a year. It's due a service on time but is way short on mileage. I've been quoted £500 by a main dealer and £350 by indie for A service + air and combination filters + brake fluid. Seems like an AMG tax to me as the A service is not much. Other than that, so far I'll have had to spend £120 over 5k miles. That was £68 to change the sun roof seal that was looking worn (clearly not essential) and £52 to change a damaged brake wear sensor. I'm not certain how long the pads have been in place (could be second set) but both them and the discs are fine at 45k miles. I measured the front (and expensive, £2k with pads at main dealer) discs and they were 60% worn. So they should last to at least 60k miles. MPG according to the trip computer is 22.2 over the 5k miles, better than Merc figures but I can't be certain that the computer is accurate because I haven't checked.
Tyres were not new when I got the car but still have plenty of tread left. My guess is that it'll be 10-12k for rears and 15-18k for front if you drive normally.
The performance this car is capable of is totally unusable on UK public roads so I was daft to want it. But I love it. I'll keep it until I can afford the W218 63 (probably another 3-4 years). My projection is that the AMG version of the W219 CLS will be a future classic. Even at 6 years old, it turns heads and attracts complimentary remarks. I don't think people realise that these cars are new Mondeo money nowadays. Just so long as you don't do starship miles, it's a great car. 5* to drive, 3* to run.

Try to buy from a main dealer if you can. The warranty will be invaluable if anything goes wrong. The problem is that these cars are very hard to get hold of and I also think that they will be a future classic for many reasons. Probably why owners are reluctant to let go of them and there are so little of them on the market compared to the numbers sold, especially the face-lifted models from late 2008 onward.
Performance-wise there is not really anything to compare against it. They are a proper bit of kit. Engine is a dream and the sound it produces through the standard pipes is the best AMG sound I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Ride is great for a performance car, with the standard comfort setting sporty enough but comfortable on longer journeys.
Running costs are higher than the usual car, but you step into this territory and you can't really expect costs to be the same as a Fiesta. This car likes a splash of your local filling stations' finest... Beware of the electrics as if they go it can be a real headache... and cost a fair wad of cash if not covered by warranty, but this is indicative of all modern cars. The Engine is fairly simple and unstressed as 507hp from a 6.2l is hardly pushing it so should prove to be strong and trouble free. Make sure climate control works properly, had one that had a mind of its own.
I have a face-lifted model with drivers pack and LSD and I just can't think of anything else I could/would/should replace it with. This is my 3rd CLS (55 followed by Brabus diesel followed by 63). The new 218 CLS63AMG in my eyes just doesn't do it for me and has gone the Turbo route, so what we are looking at here is the car that started a design revolution in the automotive sector with probably the most evocative AMG engine of modern time (and probably last NA large capacity engine AMG will ever make). It has not been the most reliable machine I have owned (electrical problems, rather than mechanical), but I wouldn't be without it. I assume the same applies to other owners...
Hope this helps...
