No surprise, I think his talents on the pitch were overshaddowed by his outstanding ability for self promotion and marketing.

A very good player never the less and I'll always remember THAT freekick.

Dont know why he bothered signing for PSG for a few months
Poor chap will have spend more time with his wife now..

And yes, 'that' free kick will define his career, oh and the goal from the half way line was not too bad
He was very unlucky leaving Real when he was out of the team, then got back in the team and he was already commited to the USA

I thought he retired when he started playing in the MLS.

I´ll never forget his goal in the final minutes to qualify England for a major tournament... top drawer!!
He was very talented, scored some great goals, was an honest professional and whilst he made some mistakes, he gave his all for England. Much as I can lament him getting sent off at the world cup, I think he made the best of his skills.
Shame he married Posh, but thats his luck out

Say what you like about Beckham, there is no doubt he gave his all for the Three Lions.

I look at the current squad and I could not say the same thing for 90% of them!

It was more than just a free kick. I've never seen a performance like that in over forty years of watching football. Beckham just decided that England were not going to lose that game and then single-handedly turned the game around. The energy and tenacity of that performance was astonishing.

A truly great player.

+1.

Never seen a performance like it. He did everything bar throwing a throw-in to himself. wink

After the public's reaction to him after Simeone I thought that we'd see the end of him. Within a year or two he had completely turned that around. I can have nothing but admiration for someone who is capable of that.

Legend, and I wish him all the best for the future, and that's from someone who thought he was a cocky little knob jockey in the mid 90s.

They'll no doubt be people dismissing his ability and reputation, but he was a top class play maker and very skillful on the ball. He must be up there for assists and he scored some great goals. I reckon he could've played a lot longer for England.

A lot of media related rubbish being spouted........ in the media frown

But it should be a farewell to a excellent footballer who never gave less than 100% on the pitch, played for and captained his National side with pride that has rarely been seen since and on his own credits played for, and won trophies for, some of the finest club teams in the world.

He was a little way off being the greatest England or English footballer but he wasn't too far off the hardest working or most committed.

I feel quite sorry, and a bit embarrassed, for him this morning reading some of the headlines and listening to some of the newscasters.

If you were 10 years old and reading these stories and therefore didn't know better you would think he was some Sunday league footballer that was good looking and that's the reason he carved out a career.

For people that have been around the game for the last 20+ years they should know better. No, he wasn't the "Worlds greatest player", but in his Utd days he was up there with the very best. You didn't get into an Alex Ferguson side by being average. He then went on to win titles and play for some of the biggest teams in world football.

I watched some of his highlights clips on Youtube last night - his range of passing was unrivalled IMO. The crosses go without saying but some of the slide-rule through balls were just exquisite.

Excellent player, but also seems a really nice guy and a great dad to boot. Best of luck to him.

Very good player, not blessed with great skill or pace, but what a right foot he has. Some of his freekicks were truly amazing. He's had a career that a lot of players could learn a lot from.

The thing about that Greece game, I remember him working his socks off for the team, but I seem to think he'd had 5 or 6 free kicks prior to the goal, that were all pretty poor, either straight at the keeper, or over. And then he just smashed it in in the last minute. Still gives me goosebumps.

Chris Waddles not a fan though...

Not in the top 1,000? Wow - Chris Waddle really has turned into a bitter little so-and-so hasn't he?
I don't remember Waddle dragging England through many tough situations single-handed? Or should that be single-footed?

The oustanding performance of his career, a fantastic effort and some sublime skill. and that is coming from someone who is not a massive fan.

He wont be of course, but he should be remembered for this game, and not lots of hair product / perfume advertising and having a grumpy wife.

Just popped in to post the Chris Waddle thing... have they got history? Seems a remarkably bitter thing to come out with.
