Spotty photographs

Hoping for a bit of advice from the resident PH photographic gurus....

Mrs WR has a fairly new Sony NEX5N camera and in the last couple of days, small "spots" have appeared on her pictures.

For example:-

Top left, and top right...(near the small tree branch)



What is the safest way to clean whatever may be causing this? (the actual outside lens itself seems to be OK)

Obviously she is mindful of making things any worse.

Any tips for carrying out this work, or is it fairly straight forward?

Should be - I don't know about that particular camera but with a dslr it is very easy. I'd try the self cleaning function first, then manual cleaning with a blower. You probably won't need to go as far as actually touching the sensor with a brush or similar.

• Update*

Pleased to say the "spots" have now gone.

She carefully blew her hairdryer over the sensor and lenses for a few seconds, seems to have done the trick.
