Anyone got any recommendations for spam filtering on Exchange Server 5.5 running on NT4/SBS? Only have about 10 users, so something inexpensive would be appropriate.

iHATESpam from sunbelt software is what we use.

To be honest we just use the client side version as its cheap. The server side version is unintuitively expensive.

Don't bother with the Symantec stuff - its far too hard to configure and does a poor job out of the box. I can't be bothered trying to make it better so...IHATESPAM it was...

Ditch exchange and run Workgroupmail you can buy a spam bolt on and it uses your native antivirus. Very cheap and easy to use with lots of good features.

www.workgroupmail.com speak to Wayne in sales.

PS. I'm not part of workgroup mail I am just very impressed with it and have been using it for 9months now.

I know there's a lot of better software than Exchange out there, but to be honest it's not worth the hassle to change. We're only a small company and I have to handle all network/server admin in between everything else and just can't afford the time to do this kinda stuff

GFI have some good "bolt on" stuff for Exchange. We use mail essentials for anti-spam and the faxmaker bolt on for faxes...

Free trial period - software is not crippled just has an expiry date...

Thanks for the replies/e-mails folks!

Still looking though as just about everything I've found so far requires Win2k or later - we're still running NT4!

I was hoping it could be avoided, but we may have to go for client side filtering

Not sure what client you are using but Outlook 2003 has some decent stuff in it, works better with the latest versions of exchange thought.

Before this we were using gfi, which was also very good.

Or....use a version of Exchange that isn't 6 yrs old and the Spam bolt on is free from M$

If we had the budget to upgrade the server hardware, OS and software and I could justify all of this just to stop spam at the server then that would be an obvious solution, but we don't...

Take a look at Sybari Antigen. We use it and it's pretty good.

IMAIL from Ipswitch (www.ipswitch.com) is also a good alternative for Exchange. The small (10 user IIRC) version is FREE. Gratis, Nada, nothing... download and go...

It was a throw away remark - but the point was that people were being critical of MS for not providing a solution to the problem of Spam that has only become prominent many years after the release of the mail software that you use.

Also, you're going to have to bite the bullet sooner rather than later as Windows NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5 support is likely to end (and technical support from consultancy companies begins to dwindle).
