Do I need Public Liability Insurance?

Hi all, a question for those that earn money part time/full time in Photography.

I have been asked by a friend that owns a VW Specialist Garage here in Lincoln to do some photographs for their track day they are holding at Blyton Park Raceway on June 7th.

I have taken photos from behind the barriers before at Cadwell Park etc, which I would be classed as just a spectator. However they are only giving me the access to photograph else where at Blyton, possibly on the infield.

Do I need public liability insurance in order to legally do this? Also is there anything else I should know prior to doing this event?

It's my first time and just looking for some pointers.

I've driven at blyton park, it is a very small track with only 1 small raised bank were you are aloud to spectate from. It would be worth checking if you are aloud access to any other area of the track for better photographs.

On my track day there was a team of photographers taking pictures which you could buy at the end of the day. I think there was 3 people and they were positioned at the Marshall posts around the track.

PL insurance covers you against claims from damaging things or injuring/killing people. As said it is probably up to the circuit to decide - their own insurances may insist on it. If not, it's your choice. Try www.aaduki.com

just as a guide for an MSv circuit you need £5 million PLI I would check with the circuit , however it is very cheap!

As an MSA accredited photographer, we are required to have £5M PLI to enable us to go trackside or work on the rally stages.

My brother is a photographer and he has done a few track days. It's not a legal requirement but most tracks now insist on the cover so you won't be getting in without it. He has it all year round for all the other jobs he does and is well worth the peace of mind. He pays £50.00 per year from Ashburnham Insurance for £1,000,000 cover and says he just ups it to £5,000,000 for his track days if the track insists on it which costs him a few quid each time.
