Hi all

Cerb has just had some work done (can't say where) and they have said that the front and rear pads need replacing. Now I'm not that technical but I had the wheels off today and the pads seem to have approx 8mm on them still.
At what mm do others feel they need changing?

They also said that the front discs needed replacing. I don't get any steering shake while braking and if I run my fingers along the disc from inner to outer edge there seems to be only a very slight lip.
They quoted me £500 + vat for all the above.

Are they trying it on?

the only way to tell is to take it to a trusted indie to get them checked.
I have had the brake 'con' from a renault dealer, a VW indie and more recently a subaru dealer.

The people I took my pride & joy to was, I thought, a "trusted indie".

How many mm on a new pad?

If you know what you're looking at and don't think they need doing then simply decline. Perhaps the garage is having a quiet week? Still, ask them if they are serious and whether they would honestly change these parts if it was their car, then tell them to stop taking the pi55.

OTOH perhaps the pads and discs are shot due to overheating?

Every Audi dealer we've used tells us we need new pads and discs on the A6 and TT when they service them. Last time they said there were only 3,000 miles of friction material left on the TT's pads. Er, they've been in the car since new, it's done 60k miles and they're only 50% worn. Right. (This is my girlfriend's car and neither of us drive on the brakes.)

Dave,

My new pads arrived by courier to the office this morning. 10mm that is ten mm! Brand New Ferodos.

Are yours cracked from a track day performance before you got the car? The standard road pads can't sustain the heat glaze and crack, therefore need replacing.

8mm, I assume you mean 8mm each side and not 4mm times 2, is just beded in!

Hmmm. 10mm new you say. Mine are approx 8mm each side and road use only.
I think, as mentioned ealier, I'll get a 2nd opinion.

they look perfectly ok to me .. and you've got upgraded discs there anyway so you don't wanna go back to the inferior TVR discs .. get a second opinion from someone else .. but from the pics alone I'd say you were being told to do something that wasn't required ..

if i remember write the mintex mdb pad measures 16.75mm thick, check with a motor factors there catalogue should have the spec in it,
they look ok from here (but im in cleveland) thickness wise, but to be safe get them checked for other dammage by some one confident, and when was your fluid last changed? i had what apeared to be a good , half warn set of brakes totaly fail at over 100mph due to old fluid over heating.
May be the dealer had bad eye sight and wanted yours out, confusing the TVR badge with the £ sign.

Those pads look ok to me. Unless there is something wrong that we cant see, then I would take it to another indie/dealer next time.

Can't be anything else wrong as they said the pads only had 1 - 2k miles left. Hinting that they were just worn down.
Did I have Mug written accross my forehead that day?
Glad I checked before booking it in.
This isn't the only thing I was unhappy about with these guys.
Won't be going there again!! Shame as I'd heard nothing but good reports about them. That's why I took it there. 180 miles round trip!

And Satman Money is happy where it is, ie. in the wifes hand bag I'll see you Sunday!!

If this 'indie' is who I think it is - STAY AWAY! Bunch of rip-off merchants and cowboys in many ways! Otherwise they are generally a nice bunch.....

Can you also mail me with the name of the indie? I've got to book the Cerb in for a service and MOT in the next couple of weeks, and want to make sure it's not the same one! Although the one I'm thinking of is probably less than 90 miles from you, so I may be OK.

I still find it annoying that we can't have some kind of points facility on the site where the customer's can give their "view" on a particular dealer or Indie.

We're all sensible enough to know that everyone's going to have a good or bad experience, as an example, there would be hundreds of people who post good things about Joolz, but at sometime even the great man, must have had one disgruntled customer.

If I read bad comments from one individual, but good comments from hundreds, I could make my own mind up.

The other way of course, is to start a thread called "saw a nice cerbera at TVRFICTION yesterday" & then another thread straight after called "Am I being ripped off for brake pads by dealer I went to yesterday"

Come on Ted

I guess there's nothing to stop you setting up a points system elsewhere .. PH doesn't get involved with that kind of thing .. but you as an individual could do it yourself .. just move all your private monies and investments offshore and sign your house over to your brother before you do it though ...

As an example, places like "what car" or "parkers price guide" put up to five stars on vehicles.

Why don't Porsche sue them, for giving the 911, only four stars etc etc
