ECUmate and tune resistor

I'm hoping someone out there is able to help me.
I have owned my Griff 500 for about 12 years, and I have always suffered from fueling and emmission issues, to the extent that I have rarely been able to pass an mot without a freindly tester.
In the past I have used a fault code reader but faults have never been registered.
When I saw the ECUmate advertised I thought I would buy one a see what it told me.
Interestingly it showed that I was running a red plus cats tune resistor.
I thought that was really good news, so I bought a white tune resistor thinking that would
solve some of my issues, but after fitting the new resistor, the ECUmate was still showing
red plus cats.
Electronics is not my strongest, but can anyone suggest why its not registering a white tune resistor?

The wrong tune can be shown on just power up- you need to check it with the engine running to start with. Otherwise you will need to get into the foot well with a meter and check what the actual resistance reading is across the ECU pins - Red is the lowest resistance map, so possibly you have a short.

I did check the readings at the ECU plug, and I had the readings of just under 3900 ohms which is correct for the white tune resistor.
As the ECUmate is still reading RED plus cats, I'm assumming that the is a fault within the ECU itself.
I have just aquired an old 3.9 discovery, and checking with the ECUmate it was indicating White plus Cats tune.
Am I right in assuming that I can use this Discovery ecu as long as I plug in the TVR chip?
Is there anything that I need to be aware of in using the disco ECU or is it as straightforward as it sounds!
