my drivers seat base is now looking a little tired so time to replace (2005/6 L322)

now this is just the 'cover' - no heat elements/padding etc

cost - £866 plus VAT

this is Land Rover taking the piss pure and simple

any suggestions for independent suppliers please?

Since you don't know of any alternative suppliers how can you say with such certainty that LR are taking piss, pure and simple?
I tell you what's taking the piss.....ranting about prices then suggesting we find you something cheaper.

Ebay search for "l322 rover seat" shows are few front seats. Depends on colour scheme required.

Why would you bother replacing it when you could get it retrimmed? Would probably be around £100 for just a seat base.

so helpful - thanks

I've checked independents who make Discovery leather seats and compared their prices to LR - better and cheaper - so it does not take a major leap of intuition to comment on the Range Rover cost?

main dealers said it was ludicrous - you could get a three piece leather suit with ten year plus warranty for less!

So if you know indys are cheaper and better why come on here asking for recommendations?......

I think what you meant to post originally runs along the lines of "I've got a very expensive motor but am a cheapskate at heart".
In future, maybe bear in mind that although your car is depreciating, new parts for it are still new and priced accordingly.
The other thing to bear in mind is that Land Rover is a manufacturer, not a supplier of after market spares, and knacked seat bases just aren't profitable for them when there are so many indys out there making them.
But a clever chap like you knows all this surely?

I think that's grossly unfair. If an annual service cost £5000 would you be a cheapskate to try to find it cheaper elsewhere? Just because it's an expensive car it doesn't mean it's a licence to print money, and I certainly agree that more than £1000 for part of a seat seems excessive. So he has asked if anyone knows of any other suppliers so he can decide if it is in fact excessive or not.

firstly, none of the indies I've contacted make seat bases for the L322 - some make for the P38 - do you know any independents making L322 seat bases as you say there are 'so many indys out there making them?

'a cheapskate' that makes me laugh - I use main dealer and 'best' parts not alternatives - but I feel aggrieved at circa £1K for a seat base the quality of which is at best dubious - a Range Rover base is leather just like leather in far less expensive cars

look at any Range Rover a couple of years old and all show wear to the drivers seat edge/bolster - its inevitable as you 'slide in/out the car' - in fact later cars seem to wear worse?

anyway, why get involved as you don't even own a Range Rover - seem to be spoiling for a fight?

Wrong. He's already decided Land Rover are taking the piss. It says so in the first post.

If it's "just leather" get down Halfords and buy a chamois and stretch that over the seat. It's "just leather" too.
What makes it costly is it's been manufactured in to a seat for a luxury car, and presumably one where the margins on replacement seat parts are minuscule.
Added to that the seats are more than likely supplied as a complete unit to LR, so rustling up just a seat base will be slightly unique, and that's what adds to the cost. You also need to step away from the concept of material cost and start thinking of the total cost of getting it to you from Daisy the cow via Solihull.
And no, I'm not spoiling for a fight, but I have limited sympathy for someone whose opening line is "Land Rover are st" but then appear to have no clue as to how to proceed and expect us to bail you out.

Crossflow - please go away and let this thread continue without your 'nit picking'

you don't know the 'margins' or even if its supplied as a 'full set' - so why make a wild guess apart from trying to appear 'clever/smart' - if you don't know then don't comment please?

I most certainly do not want your sympathy or advice

thank you

edit - just to pick you up on a point 'slightly unique'?

something is either unique or not

Nit picking you say?
Anyhow, if I'm so wrong about seats being supplied as a whole thing, you've obviously never tried buying a driver's footwell mat by itself. They only come as pairs. Who woulda thought eh?
Anyway, good luck finding your seat, but since you don't want to listen to suggestions as to why you might have to pay over the odds and genuinely believe that because you want one Land Rover must supply it and at a price that you consider "right" I suspect it could be a lengthy search. Oh hang on, a slightly lengthy search. smile

I have a new Ivory and Aspen drivers side seat back cover if you are interested. Bought in error for a 2002 L322 when in fact it's for a 2005+. Only want what I paid for it, £99+P&P.
Keep an eye on ebay as they pop up on occasion for reasonable money.

Perusing an old Autocar I came across an advert for Leather interiors for Land Rovers:

They quote £995 + VAT for a Vogue interior (leather facings OEM style)

They have 3 shops

www.theseatsurgeons.com - York
www.ds-automotive.com- Suffolk
www.sunroofandstripes.com- South West

May be worth a call.
