Just got back from a holiday in France and it's the first time I've had the chance to put a few miles on the XJR since I bought it in November.

Well the fuel consumption was as good as I hoped for. Averaged 29.2 for the run down (approximately 350 miles). Mainly keeping to the speed limits which meant long periods at between 70 and 80mph.

Back in the UK I did approximately 450 miles on the run home including a diversion to a friends in the Midlands. Stuck in traffic jams on the M6 and then periods at 90+ to compensate and it managed 27.5.

Not bad.

dissappointed you didnt get late teens, must try harderlaugh

i done St Tropez last year in the XJr-6 and managed a respectable 19mpg, though i did go thru the night cruising between 100 & 130 most of the way.

I agree, maybe the throttle cable needs adjusting, not opening fully

You didn't say what XJR you have, 6, 8 or Ally

Mine's a V8 X350.

To be fair I was trying to be economical and I doubt I'll get those figures again.

29 is good, on equal runs i normally see 24ish on my V8 s/c, 20-22 on the 6cyl s/c and surprisingly ive hit 36 in the TWR cruising at about 80 for 70 miles, most impressed.
i do like to exploit the performance in the charged models, bun once settled into a run they can be "quite" ecconomical

On a long run I held my X350 XJR steady at 70 MPH on a fairly clear, level motorway and achieved 35 MPG according to the trip computer. I'm pleased.

The funny thing is that I have a "sensible, economic" Smart to keep my motoring costs reasonable overall and on motorway trips the Jag is the most economic. The Smart does something like 34 MPG at 70 MPH and uses super unleaded. (Its a Forfour Brabus - but I'd still expect better)

The XJR is a luxury I can't really afford, even with the "reasonable" fuel consumption. I simply have too many cars.

The thing is it's one of the best cars I've owned and every time I take it out I know I'll regret selling it.

I set the cruise and reset the trip after getting up to 80mpg on a DC and after about 20 miles i had averaged 32mpg.
Soon dropped back to 27 mpg by the time i made it home via A and B roads.. laugh (S Type R for the record)
Poor fuel consumption is the price you pay for enjoyable motoring though.

I don't think that's poor fuel consumption.

I had an S type R a few years back. Great car, really enjoyed it.

Just ordered four new Michelin PS3's for the XJR, looks like I'm keeping it after all. Something else will have to go.

Well I've just sold my XJ6 so that will pay for the tyres.

The XJR still has it's original Pirellis fitted so it's due a treat !

What would the 4.2 XKR (2006 onwards) be like?
Read a few times that people are getting 24mpg average.. town driving but heavy, stop start traffic

Possible?
What are you all getting?

I only do 500-600 miles a month, and only use my car on 3 days a week and some evenings due to work and not really having anywhere to go..

I want a nice car next, but i dont want anything hideous on fuel..

Thanks

Depends on your definition of hideous, compared to a diesel Eurobox it will be ruinous, compared to an 80's Sierraits economical. And just think of the style in which you are getting therebiggrin

go get on e and post photiesbiggrin

My old x308 4.0 XJR used to return 19-20mpg average.

My two x350 4.2 XJRs returned 23mpg and 22mpg respectively.

Most of that driving a mix of bumbling around but mainly motorway work. I've never worked out how people were averaging anything approaching 25mpg unless they were driving Miss Daisy. smile

i could live with that. Do you think it would be the same in an XKR?
Daft question as its the same engine in a lighter car.. But I dont know how they are tuned etc
