On a tangent here, what was the organisation for 'Veteran' Motorists. I remember seeing the 'V' symbol with a number in it (presumably for years of driving) along with the then mandatory yellow square AA badge around 20 years ago.
Do you mean the Guild of Experienced Motorists?
Liebchen - each member of my own family trained in Germany. We have IAM and RoSPA (all goldy stars) here and a German advanced ddo-dah run by their police force.
I did retake mine after the incident - honour bound to do so - und the BiBs in this family (including the Swiss gendarme and the one who works in Germany) all took hand in getting me trained up again ...
For record - if I had slightest doubt about reflexes, skills and know-how - would never drive at all!
Know exactly what crunch really means and still against speed cameras as they do too little too late und do not improve things at all
Most of the men (Swiss) were also trained in Swiss Army
Family has racing history as well. Were Ettore Bugatti's bankers in early days of motor sport .....and eldest cousin raced F3 and still participates actively in Speedway..... He is a road safety nerd and Germans really hate him - as he has summat to do with speed enforcement and safety .....
Mad Doc? Again - IAM and RoSPA Goldy star standard. As rest of his family.
Family were in press some years ago as "oddest petrolheads" und there was talk of us at time as being in Guinness Book of Records as family mit mostest Goldy RoSPAs - but some of gang are bit "shy of publicity" ....
We insist our young earn privilege of learning to drive und we also insist on advanced training for them as we do not wish to be pacing floors in panicky worries when they are due back und are late.

IAM,
with respect Gary I dont wish to ambush your thread but would like to state that taking this test and doing the course will open your eyes to driving and would be well worth think about.
Hiya...Cen...
I think you're persuading me to take the test. Am I right?
I have done...
I'm an assessor for the IAM ;observers;, to make sure they are all up to the standard to 'observe' and 'advise'.
Regards,
Gary

I take it you're a Class 1 then, sir...
My experience of Class 1s is that 99% of 'em are total petrolheads...but with their heads screwed on the right way (largely)...as they have a heavy responsibility. After all - if your job requires to drive like a loon - it behooves one NOT to prang...and harm anyone else...

HPC ?? Whats that all about then?
High Performance Course...interested myself...a current member of the "High Performance Club" told me a bit about it.
Apparently their entrance exam is on a par with a Rospa Gold (and then some).
Real driving enthusiasts...but the entry requirements are very high...as they should be, I expect...

Hi...In my force there is no Class 1 as such nowadays...(I think that's the same elsewhere).
There are standard, response, Advanced and Advanced(TPAC).
I'm Advanced, but not TPAC trained (tactical pursuit and containment)..ie: I can pursue but not make 'contact' or do the 'boxing in' procedures. My course is in January...
Consequently, I can only 'assess' the observers and not 'examine' the associates. After January next year, I'll be Advanced(TPAC) and may consider doing some 'Examination' stuff with the IAM.

Now I'm interested (current car is a maserati 3200) where do I find info?
Thanks
Dave
Only slightly O/T - IIRC I read the Guild of Experienced Motorists' website a two or three years ago and you couldn't join if you had any points on your licence. Now only disqualification goes against you and even with that it looks like you can fill in a form and if they think the disqualification wasn't for anything to awful - you can join!
So even GEM's and prospective GEM's are getting scammed - sorry state of affairs eh?
