"But the surrounding app ecosystem is unlikely to match other consoles which have Netflix, video conferencing tie-ins and other non-gaming aspects"

This is bks surely? It's going to be a PC. No one is going to rewrite all their code for this, at the very least it will be a cut down/hidden version. So it's actually likely to be more flexible and less locked down than xbox/ps4.
Also, steam now has an apps section so it's viable that netflix and co will be available.

I'll be at the front of the queue for this for my cinema room!

Missed that, but it looks interesting. Especially In home streaming and support for (I guess) netflix and the like.

I wonder if it will run on a Pi?

I'm very interested, was hoping yesterday's announcement would have been a release date to go head to head with he new consoles.

Its interesting that they announced the OS without announcing the hardware, im hoping for a smartphone/tablet type device with a HDMI out and keyboard/mouse support. But its likely just going to be a PC style box, it will be interesting to see if they go for just controller support or keyboard/mouse as well.

I have a dislike for playing FPS's on consoles due to the controllers, I much prefer a mouse.

Wow the 3DO was 20 years ago! I wanted one.

It has similarities but I doubt it will go the same way. Steam already has massive support on PC, they have 3rd party backing and their own product range.

Hmm not really sure who\what this is meant to be for. If you want a console surely the PS4 and new XboxOne already have a very well matured exosystem and those consoles are basically PC's in a box now anyway as they use PC architecture.

If you want a PC you go and buy a PC, you can even get all sorts of small form factor funny shaped boxes these days if you want it to look less PC like so I'm just a bit puzzled as to what market they are actually aiming at with this?

Its selling point is that it has steam. A cheap and easy way to download, update and play games from a small box that can sit in your living room. I like the idea, I'm a big user of steam from my gaming pc but would love something for the big tv in the living room.

It makes sense for Valve, people are moving away from pc's, pc's being the platform that steam uses and with the fibre broadband revolution downloading games is quicker and easier than ever.

Unless this ends up being pretty well subsidised I can't see why you wouldn't just buy one of the many small form factor PCs and install Steam on that?

Got the benefit of full DirectX support then instead of whatever emulated version you can get on Linux.

This does have the potential to go one way or the other really. If the hardware is up to it, next gen games coming out they can compete.

I'm not a console or PC gamer fanboy; I have both. But, 95% of the time, the consoles get turned on first. They're just that much easier to pick up and play. The Steam box needs to have that to compete, if they make it too much like a PC they're not going to win console gamers over and if the cost:hardware ratio isn't up to scratch they wont win any PC players over either.

Love the commitment valve are showing.

I'll always prefer the "all in one" style that a pc allows over the consoles that are currently collecting dust/bookends.

However having a gaming orientated media center pc would be nice. I'll be trying out the OS as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I am beginning to wonder if it won't be a box at all?

Perhaps more like a client app that can be added to smart tv's?

If I could get a Valve app on my Pansonic 55 Plasma and play games on line through the wifi connection I would be pretty cool with that.

I still want Hlaf Life 3 though!

Did I say that already? Probably did! wink

Interesting thought.
They mentioned home streaming which I assume means having your big PC do the heavy lifting and the local machine effectively just showing the output in an Onlive style but local as opposed to over the net. I'd be well into that if I could run on ipad and/or my Pi and stop having to take my PC out of the office and plug it into the big screen!

But like Guvernator said, if you're heavily into the idea of doing PC gaming on your TV you could have a SFF PC built and running by the end of this week with the Steam App's already very good Full screen mode acting as a OS, rather than waiting however many months for the steam product to become available. I don't see Steam having the power to get good spec hardware on the cheap either, so pound for pound you'd probably get better hardware on a system you built yourself.

So on the face of it they are going to be selling small factor form PCs without giving the end user quite as much customisation options. And the issue with that idea is that i imagine the vast majority of people who are going to be into Steam games are going to have the knowledge to screw together a PC anyway.

Just think how many less XBOXones or PS4s do you think would be sold if it was possible to use that platform's games AND use software that is ultimately very similar to what would be offered on the console, but in a machine that anyone with 3/5th's a brain cell could build on a weekend afternoon with possibly more cost effective parts. I'd never buy a console again.
