Power to tarmac

Summer of '82.
I would never forget that one.
I - 15 years old - was on a holiday with the parents. Lovely place to go to: woods, sandy roads, mean Cavaliers, roaring Manta 400s and the Escort RS2000 who beat them all. A friends friend had one mean Ford: amateur rally driver doing 100 mph at nights practice, rain did not matter. Steel bull bars to avoid rabbits to touch the precious white Ford colours.
Every year the local police organised a rally-sprint-contest, just to keep in touch with the wheels they did not dare to catch. On the parking lot: Mini's, Sunbeams and other 80s hot stuff. Some serious rally wheels did some impressive runarounds. I loved to watch that.
Last car of the grid: a f
Sierra 2.0 (that's 115 bhp ladies and gentlemen) estate! And grey for all we know. The driver not only broke the laprecord but also managed to stay on track without touching any cone or pavement. A Manta broke the axl on the occasion, some Mini's hit steel fences . . . The Sierra driver happened to be an ex rally man who obviously knew what he was doing. Impressive!
That day I learnt about power: it's flow and control.
