My 1999 C4 will be out of warranty soon. Should I take out a warranty? If so who offers the best deal?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Forget it Warrantees are a big fat waste in my experience. OPC (or other sources) will so nark you off with arguing the toss it destroys the feeling of security one should get with the warrantee.

Personally I have been "self insuring" by not bothering with such items and I am convinced I have saved £$$YEN in the long run.

Well said!! They are products from which people make money!
Use an indie garage and you will be ok (chances are).
My TVR Cerbera blew up and warranty paid for nothing!

Thanks for the replies.

I take your points and think warranties are just another form of insurance. I bought my 996 from a Honda main dealer and it was covered by a Honda warranty. This has been excellent and paid out twice with no problem but I can't find anyone who will recommend a warranty company. Looks like I'll bank the warranty cost and hope I never need to spend it.

Your options I believe would be:
Warranty Direct www.warrantydirect.co.uk/
Warranty Wise www.warrantywise.co.uk/
or the OPC warranty

Until recently I had only heard good things about the Warranty Direct policy, although a recent tale of someone having bought a Boxster, had an RAC inspection and got the all-clear for the dreaded RMS problem - RMS rears it's head after a few weeks of ownership, and WD won't pay out as they insist it must've been present before the start of the policy - contradicting the RAC. Subsequently both RAC and WD won't accept responsibility leaving a new owner with a £500 bill.

Warranty Wise - cover seems very good, but don't know anyone with experience.

OPC - VERY expensive and still a 3rd party warranty (not with Porsche direct - was www.carcareplan.co.uk but don't know with the new "flavour" of warranty). However your OPC should treat you with a bit more respect if you have this.

When my 996 ran out of warranty last year I bought an extended warranty from my OPC. A month ago my catalyst broke inside the exhaust. I took it to the OPC and what was considered a routine exchange turned out to be a major issue. For some reason my car was fitted with US type catalysts and they had to order one and kept the car for over a week. The part was £ 300 more expensive that the normal one and the warranty would not cover it. As the car has only covered 20.000 miles I complained and after a lengthy discussion Porsche goodwill paid - but not the ext. warranty. My advice following this: Don't bother and save the money.

Porsche warranty wouldn't pay for roof motors & control box. Has anyone found them of use?

Case for warranty - My 996 TT with 10K miles , leaking a negligible amount of oil - engine had to be stripped down completely to determine cause of leak - porous block found - engine then reassembled with new block.

Cost of work amounted to ~ £10K worth inc parts & labour - boy was I glad I had a warranty !!

My concern would be something REALLY big happening. For example, the engine in my boxster recently destroyed itself, requiring a whole new engine at the cost of £12K. Fortunately it was under original manufacturers warraty, so was replaced FOC. Now, I presume the extended porsche warranty and most aftermarket warranties would also have paid for this.

A couple of '000 I can handle (not like, but handle), but £12K I couldn't - to me this is why you buy a warranty.

Well so far we have:

Don't bother with warranty = 4

Yes to warranty = 3 (with one double vote)

Warranty, it's a form of gambling.
