I took the grille off my Mk1 the other day.Once the service bonnet was off it revealed big cracks along the top corners. Is there a way to remove the grille without resorting to bending it so much that it cracks? I had to repair the nearside corner by glassing in a penny washer to provide a locating hole. And glassed and glued the offside corner.

Possibly the best upgrade I've ever made is changing the pepperpot to the mk11 grill. Soooooo much better looking and more stable at speed as well.
Sorry not an answer to your question, but if the worst does happen seriously consider the upgrade.

Does the mk2 grill swap straight out for the mk1 grill?

I took my grill off the other day and don't recall having to bend it at all.

Is the grille supposed to just unbolt then?

As far as I remember it's service bonnet off, 4 bolts underneath the grill and two on top, then just slides out.

Mine has 4 self tappers underneath, and has two holes on the top surface which locate on the main bonnet lugs. No sliding involved at all. Maybe because my car is quite an early one? Maybe they changed it after finding out that the design was ste? I think it's going to get some self tappers and slots in the top surface next time I'm in there.
