I've only used 'winters' on our two Ford Focus cars and they're brilliant (worth every penny), but can't comment on Porsche use. However, Porsch-Apart do sometimes advertise sets of four wheels with winter tyres on ebay so it may be worth having a quick search, especially at this time of year when demand is low. Search for 'Carrera alloy' or similar...
ETA Yep, there's a set on Ebay now that might suit.

You should try and look on some of the foreign Porsche forums (US/Germany) as more people there use winter wheels. For instance, I am aware of a guy using 18" wheels of a 996 C4S on his 997 C2S.

I am considering getting some winter wheels and tyres for my 997.2. Does anyone put winter wheels on their Porsche does it make a lot of difference?
Will other Porsche model wheels fit on my car, or am I restricted to 997 wheels?
Thanks
Drove 5000 miles to Norway and back on winter wheels/tyres (997).Will other Porsche model wheels fit on my car, or am I restricted to 997 wheels?
Thanks
They make a massive deference.
They make a phenomenal difference. For me it removed all worry about being stranded for the winter period. I would put them on any of my future cars from now on.
I bought a set of 18" Carrera IV wheels for my 997.2 C2 and they had new N Rated Pirelli Sottozero tyres. I got them in December 2012 and they did 850 miles.
I am selling my car before winter this year so they are up for sale but was going to wait till nearer winter time. No crazy prices either. Drop me an email if interested.

Definitely worth it. I wouldn't be without mine... 6k through the Alps this winter in my 997.1 and by far the best 'upgrade' to make are winter tyres (and wheels).
Picked up some Carrera IV's from ebay with winter tyres for less than a kilopound so keep your eyes peeled. Also mine are 18's and resultantly much more compliant - they give just a little bit more which is good considering the -20mm sus on mine and I assume (?) would help traction etc on uneven snowy roads. They also fit PCCB's of 997.1 size - tho do check if you have different variant that a smaller wheel will fit round etc.
Separate wheels are just much easier to change, you can worry about the wheels less as well. Do make sure you check the bolts as grit & salt and nasty weather seem to eat mine quickly at the front come change over time.

I lived in Sweden some years ago. At the end of March one year when the compulsory winter tyres period ended, I took my old winter wheel/tyre combination off my 968 (the tyres were close to the 3mm wear limit) and put my summers on, with near new premium brand performance tyres. A few days later, we had a late snowfall and the car was virtually undriveable. This was the first time in 3 years living there that I'd driven the car in winter conditions without winter tyres and it really showed what a night and day difference there was.
