Hi Gents,
In Spa and at hotel, went to lock car. Window was open from driving.

Window lifted on locking, but lift motor continued to try and drive. Pulled fuse and it stopped (Fuse 32, 10A) It sounds like the motor is driving the flexible 'rack' and mashing it.

What is the fix? A new window lift motor/mechanism....I'm guessing. Don't believe it's the window ecu or the small pcb on motor, because when you use a screwdriver to flick the door lock/shut to 'closed' the window can be operated by button on tunnel console...but it is still noisy on the last 5 mm motion, but the motor does stop, whereas going for the normal shut door and lock on key blipper it still continues to drive.

I've now got motor disconnected and have to open door v.carefully, helping glass ease past hockey stick.
Thanks in anticipation for any help.

Sounds like the window ecu has lost the reference points for fully closed/open. I can't remember the exact method for resetting on a mk1 and the search didn't bring up much.

Anyone know?

If not then I would still say its the ecu. If the motor works up and down when you're in the car then the motor itself is fine, it's whatever is telling it to keep trying to close the window even after its reached the stop.

Can't remember for sure, but I thought there is a micro switch to sense when the window is open/closed?

Dave/Pacman,
OK, slept on this now. Probably agree it is whatever electronic/mechanical bit of kit that tells motor to stop is the culprit.

Think I'll do the swap over of ecu and encoder from pass. side to drivers side as my next step.
Cheers for replies.

Think the door ECU counts the motor revolutions to determine open/close positions.

The system relies on the door encoder to count the number of teeth on the window regulator, there is a switch in the door for the door open/close signal, this info is passed to the door ecu. If the door ecu loses position then there is a method for resetting, you have to manually set the door height, then pull the ecu power then plug back in.

Has it rained, lost battery power, or could the door have got out of sync?

From Mytuscan

Windows not closing properly/all way up

This can often be caused by a faulty or wet window Encoder PCB unit on the window motor.

Remove the door inner covering by undoing the 2-3 bolts in the door pocket. The Encoder is the small rectangular PCB with 3 wires coming from it screwed to the front of the window motor. Try any of the following:

Try putting the windows all the way down then setting the alarm to see if they go all the way back to the top. Sometimes this can simply reset the system and fix the problem.
Spray some contact spray (available from Halfords, etc) onto the PCB unit. Leave for about 5 minutes and see if it's fixed the problem.
Remove the PCB unit and try drying it with a hairdryer to remove any moisture.
Try simply removing the PCB and reattaching it in case of a loose connection.
Inspect the modules and the wiring loomb connectors associated with the modules. If corrosion is evident, clean the affected item/s and seal off with petroleum jelly or similar grease. It’s a good idea to smother the modules in non-corrosive silicone based sealant to keep the water out.

^^^Neil,
Thanks for advice and quotes from mytuscan site.

Yep, had heavy rain on E42 on Thursday travelling to first stop near Liege.
Hadn't thought about using hair-drier to dry the little pcb/encoder out...good shout. I've got some good contact spray with me. Couple of mates are moving south a bit on Monday. Should be able to try this then.

CliveF on here, was replacing injectors on his mate's Tuscan engine this afternoon....TVRs, don't you just love'em! This was a success!!
