I read somewhere that the new Mustang V8 - reviewed in evo this month (they said it is lots of fun) - can be had for a smidge over £20k in the UK, landed with all taxes paid and conversion work done (other then to RHD of course).

Not as cheap as it is in the US (equivalent of £14.7k before taxes) and yes, it has cart springs with 300bhp (?!!), but this is pretty tempting isn't it?

I read in Autocar that it's nearer 25k?

Btw, although it still has a live axle, I don't think it actually has leaf springs...the diags in Autocar seemed to show coilovers at the rear.

I must confess that, whilst I am generally no fan of American cars, the pics in EVO and AutoCar had me drooling somewhat. Mmmmmm.

It looks really nice and I would be very tempted at 20k even more so at 14.5. What I'd like to know is ... why the massive difference?

I was somewhat drooling over it too after seeing pictures of it. Then I saw it in person... and fell in love.

[cynicalmode]

Well, it costs soooo much to ship them the cost is more than doubled compared with the USA prices.

[/cynicalmode]

We all know it is a rip-off, the prices in Europe are far higher than the US, UK is higher than most European countries, although closer now than previously.

Depends whether you import it yourself or buy from an importer. DIY = £5k cheaper, more hassle, 6 to 8 weeks waiting. Either way round, you don't have the US warranty

I'm up for one of these, but I want to see how the factory recalls go. There's risk buying a US Ford in the first model year ('99 Lighting intercooler problems, Mustang Cobra engine recall, etc.)

It's more like +50% if you import yourself. Not sure if this will display correctly, but here's what you'd expect at an exchange rate of 1.80:

.................................$..................£
2005 Deluxe Coupe........24,370.00.......13,538.89
Sales Tax @ 8%............3,046.25........1,692.36
Shipping..................1,000.00..........555.56
Shipping Insurance @ 2.5%...685.41..........380.78
Import Duty @ 10%.........2,841.63........1,578.68
VAT @ 17.5%...............5,470.13........3,038.96
Import & Customs Agents.....360.00..........200.00
SVA Preparation.............360.00..........200.00
SVA ........................270.00..........150.00

Total....................38,403.41.......21,335.23

Would one have to pay local sales tax (8%) if exporting? We are already paying 17.5% VAT at this end. That would wipe nearly £2k off the landed price (your calculations show VAT on top of local sales tax).

That's a good question. I've paid the US taxes but avoided UK import duty and VAT (returning resident). From the discussions on http://users.boardnation.com/~import-car, it sounds as though some buyers may have managed to avoid US duty, but I'm really not sure how. Some states like New Hampshire have 0% sales tax, but I believe you need to show residence, to deter out-of-state buyers.

It may be worth investigating further, as the UK import duty and VAT are charged on top of the purchase price, so it's tax on tax on tax...

£2.5K VAT,
£1.1K Customs Duty
£6-800 Shipping
£500 SVA work & Test
Profit for Dealer, don't know how much he'll make, but it's better money than on a Mondeo or similar.

Ford say it has the axle for drag racing - to keep the US racers happy.

As for importing as a rough guide add 33% to the US price, oh and welcome to Rip Off Britain. £800 and 2-3 weeks to ship. I drove the previous shape Mustang in the US last year - it handled real bad, loads of bod roll.

What if you had family over in the USA, send them the money, and lets say u got them to buy it for you.
Get them to then send it to you as lets say....a birthday present?

Would you avoid any tax such as V.A.T etc...?

The customs limit for gifts is £32, you could get them to write "Happy birthday son, this car only costs £31 in the States" on the outside, but the customs officers might get suspicious.

Yeah I agree I hope that the court case going on about the limits on booze & fags allows us to bring in what we want. Bet the German customs don't stop their people from bringing back booze! Our German friends have just loaded up a Merc truck with wine that they were laying down for 10 years time.
Yeah I know its worth staying friendly with them for all the good parties in 10 years time!

A mate of mine had his car taken at Dover. There was him and 3 mates that went over on a day trip to stock up - it was all for their own use with the exception of some smokes for his 70+ year old grandad. Customs decided they were boot legging and took the car - at about 2am. Lucky for my mate, he grew up down that way and had someone to call to come and get them. At the same time there was a guy with a disabled badge that was obviously boot legging but they couldnt take his car because of the badge.
