Having searched on the topic, it looks a bit hush-hush. Lots of "shooshing".

Would someone kindly send me an e-mail on what is the function of this mechanism.

PS Sun is starting to emerge down here after 6 long months of winter following purchase of toy. This equals more roof down and more Lloyd to the Axminster. Hoping my licence will last the duration of the dry season.

Yep.

My handbook doesn't seem to refer to it. Can't find it in the bible either.

Tried pulling it, with no obvious result. Maybe it's faulty, hence the query...perhaps it's something useful that might need fixing?
