MK5 Golf - bumpers interchangeable between models?
Discussion
The OH has completely destroyed the front bumper on the Golf, ripped it off reversing into a parked car (don't ask....)
I had a look online and found I can actually get a GTI or Carcatere front bumper cheaper than the original standard TDI one.
Are they a straight swap from standard TDI to GTI? If not, what else needs changing?

There is no such thing as a facelift MK5. They changed the grille on the 2007 MY onwards GT (later renamed GT Sport) models to mimic the GTI and R32 but that is not classified a facelift!

OP - Changing to a OEM GTI bumper requires a new carrier I believe, and a few other bits such as foglights are different. Its been a while since I last looked into it but I seem to remember seeing a good guide on uk-mkivs.net. However, the aftermarket copy part GTI bumpers will fit a standard Golf without modification, although fitment won't be perfect. [url]

Oh. I`d better change the phrase `facelift` to `specification change`.
Thanks
You are right in that for that model the grille is interchangeable with the GTI, but for a lesser Golf or older GT it won't be.Thanks

In the OP's case a 2006 Sport will just have a normal bumper/ grille like the below:

Thread update! The bumper has been fitted and painted and didnt need the GTI carrier so replaced the broken one with the standard carrier. The bodyshop said it needed a bit of gentle persuasion, but I think it looks great and not too 'outlandish' for a non-VW bumper.
Bumper was £45 and suprisingly included the grill (Which was selling for £100+ on ebay!) and the bumper carrier was £75. Fitting new carrier and bumper as well as priming, preparation and pearlescent paint of bumper cost £330.
Quick photo, apologies for quality and glare!

I recently changed the bumper on my GT TDI to a GTI one (although my TDI is the 2006 model) and the guy fitted it without a problem, it took a little bit of adapting (not the plastic more the packing on the inside of the bumper needed trimming) and it fitted perfectly. You will however need new foglights if you intend to use the GTI style bumper. (as you'll see I don't have the fogs yet, oops)

Did you try fitting your original fogs? I vaguely remember reading somewhere these bumpers don't need the special GTI fogs but could be wrong. Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
