Think that the factory fit pioneers have finally given up the ghost!
Anyone got any tips for direct replacements?

I can't remember the original size but it is rare these days. The holes in the door in mine were small enough to take the next size speaker down and it looks fine. There was only about 5mm diameter difference in any case.

JL Audio TR600-CXI fit perfectly, they are 6" in diameter, most speakers are now 6.5" and difficult to fit around the door moulding without modification.
The depth of the speaker is also important as the window will clash if the speaker is too deep.

How do the TR600's compare in sound quality?

JL Audio are good speakers, they are only 6" so a huge amount of base can't be expected, however, the sound is clear with little distortion at high volume.

As has been said, they are pretty useless when on the move, especially with the roof down.

I use mine mainly for Bluetooth, even than I can only have a conversation at low speeds but you can hear the phone ring so I can either slow right down or pull over.
