The little s@&ts next door like to sit on my car roof and bonnet. I had been annoyed but tried to be calm, but under the petrol station lights tonight saw just how bad they have scratched my car. They seem to walk a certain path with gritty feet and have carved a trail of scratches which look rather horrible. I know it's just a car and I shouldn't stress too much, but I'd rather spend money on a cat deterant than on trips to a body shop for paint.

I have no garage and no immediate plans to move so am stuck with the cats living next door. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to keep them off? I might get a water pistol, but that is only any good when I'm at home and spot them on the car.

I really hope someone like Francis will be able to polish these out when the cats have been deterred.

You need to catch them on the car and give them a good quick soaking with a hose pipe. You will only need to do this a few times and the won't come back.
Any light scratches etc should polish out.

Thanks. I shall have to work out how to do that - my tap is past the car! I reckon I might leave a hose out front for a while with the auto shut off on it.

Thanks for the reassuring comments about the scratches polishing out.

Two ways of getting rid of them.

Either get AMDBSNick to come round with his shotgun and terminate them OR

Buy an battery powered water pistol which has a range of about 30 feet and keep it handy. They do not like them at all.

Scaring them off will make the damage worse, as they'll stick their claws out...

At my old place I had terrible trouble with cats. Every other day I would come out in the morning only to find muddy paw prints all over my cars. These were particularly stupid cats that would even great me at my car door despite having water thrown at them. I tolerated it until I acquired the vantage.

I bought one of these

and hey presto, I never had any paw prints again… Even though the offending cats were still in the area.

There are many reviews about how this gadget doesn’t work. So it might not work for all cats. However, it worked for me.

Might be worth a punt for 15 quid. Not silent as they say. I could hear a faint high frequency noise, plus if its located in a high thoroughfare area you may have to change the battery once a fortnight.

+1 for the STV610 - MEGA-SONIC CAT REPELLER. As the previous poster said consumes batteries quickly if in a high usage area.

We purchased the mains adapter also. We have it just outside the garage door facing down the drive and front garden, which is 16m to the road by 10m wide and we don't get any cats now.

Much better option than one of our neighbours solution of shooting them, which landed him court and a criminal record.

I am really pleased to hear about this sonic device. I had my doubts that these things will work, but glowing reviews are great news.

I shall pop on amazon and report back on my progress. If I place an order today it might come tomorrow with Amazon prime.

Regarding how cats can damage the windscreen I guess it is grit on the pads of their feet or their claws being out as they slide down it. Or perhaps their metal bell thing on their collar?

Dogs are out of the question because of my travel commitments, which is a shame.

If buying electronic scarers buy good quality. I speak from experience in deterring things from a Koi pond. Scarecrow water device works well but likely to soak your car when activated by cat or any person triggering it. Works well for pond. Have heard mixed results for ultrasonic but again good electronics and a power supply adapter key in my opinion. The manufacturer below (i have no connection) have worked on their electronics for this purpose and not simply modified alarm devices to suit.
