I guess that as you get older you will have a lot more contact with the big C and I have read many threads on here, some absolutely heart breaking, about others who are suffering or dealing with loved ones who have been struck down by this absolute bd.

Luckily, so far, we have only had a brief acquaintance with the C, mainly through friends and my dad who got and luckily survived bowel cancer 3 years ago. I, myself, went the heart attack route instead 4 years ago but followed by 3 instances of basal cell. OK it grows yet all of them were eventually cut out.

The reason for writing this frown

My ex-wife, who I deal with everyday as I still live in the house with the kids, went to the hospital to have some lumps in her breast checked last week and today was results day. The lumps were of no importance but an eagle eyed scanner op spotted something else.

6mm in size and emerging from a duct. Biopsy says its breast cancer and grade 3. So it's been caught early but 3 means it's aggressive.

I only posted on here that she had a mini stroke on the morning of her 44th birthday, a few months ago and now this.

Currently she doesn't want anyone to know and I have been sitting on this since the afternoon and just had to write it down. We now have to work out how to tell the kids.

Cheers. frown

PS what really choked me was when she called to tell me and mentioned that her boyfriend was in tears.

As with many I know the pain of that the C word brings Croyde, have also posted on my experience of it. I wish your ex all the best, by the sounds of things you still care for her a lot.

... tough news indeed and sad to read, but don't tell your kids until you are both in a fit state to handle the event. not sure how old your kids are, but look at the Mac site as they have lots of practical advice on helping children... and you.

Thanks mate. Kids are 7, 10 and 13 so pretty young yet savvy. They'll know something is up.

Might be aggressive but could an urgent mastectomy (or even a lumpectomy) be a life-saver?

Cancer isn't the killer it once was though its still an awful fking disease!

Be strong for her and your kids. I went through this only 4 months ago with the discovery of a 5cm tumour in my bowel. It has now been removed and things look better but you never know what's round the corner. I stayed positive and mentally strong which helped tremendously (my youngest kids are 7 and 10) but what really drove me forward was the strength of those around me, especially my incredible wife and my very brave 21 year old who had to endure the "I'm relying on you to look after your brother and sister" speech. Their strength and that of virtually all my good friends made dealing with the st so much easier.

Remember my first sentence. I was told also " what you think you know about chemotherapy is more than likely 10 years outoif date". It really is moving that quickly.

Good luck to you and especially to your ex. May you both come through this strong!

What an awful thing. 1 in three of us, something I read, said.

Ex or not, you must feel horrid. Be glad it was spotted. My GF had a scare which left us upside down for a bit, 2 years ago.

Donating to cancer research won't help you guys, nothing much has happened yet. But hopefully in the next few decades, something will be discovered.

Commiserations to you and yours. I hope she ends up fine. She stands a good chance of being ok.

All the best croyde! I'm sure she will get through it.
My Nan had the big C, she fought through it and is now healthy as ever.

But saying that, she also had 2 heart attacks and has died 3 times and is still around to call me a dick..

Cancer is a proper bd, but, breast cancer, even aggressive, caught early is very treatable.
My daughter was diagnosed with Grade 3, she had a mastectomy, a year of chemo, followed by three weeks of radiotherapy, and is currently on a years course of receptin.
She is clear of cancer and the outlook is good, although we are very cautious, her hair is growing and she is getting it styled next week so abandoning her friend wiggie.

It is not easy but a positive attitude goes a long way, best wishes to your ex for a positive resolution to this.

It does help. Unfortunatley getting drugs to the table takes time and money. Lots of it.

Wish your ex wife the best for me but it can be sorted.

Such a terrible condition hope that with it bein caught early she ll be ok.

I have never had a family member with it but a few friends fathers that had it. One fought it only for it to return and he sadly passed the other just gave up and passed about 6 months later than they said he would.

Thanks for the replies people. Thankfully she has private medical insurance so the op is going to be next week so it's good to be getting on with the treatment and the options once they really know what they are dealing with.

Sorry to hear about this but it sounds like the systems for catching it early have done their job. Hopefully the insurance will sort out the best and quickest treatment.

I've literally just sent off my application for PMI, it really does seem to be worth it when you have a major scare like this.

I expect you know this but Macmillan are there not just for the person with cancer but also for the relatives. Do use them as they will help.

It's a bugger and no mistake but the recovery rates are always on the up so whilst you will naturally feel low there is every reason to be optimistic. Do yourself a big favour and don't take ant statistics you see to heart. Everyone is different and will react differently to treatment. Take each day as it comes. You'll have low days and high days, as will your ex. It's natural so don't feel bad about feeling happy.

Croyde,

IIRC your local to me anf hope the below is of some comfort anyway,

My mum had a very agressive, fast growing form of breast cancer a few years ago, 20 odd pea size tumors in the breast section that had started spreading into armpit lymph nodes and even the one between the heart and lungs. Although it came as a shock owing to the severity etc. the NHS is invaluble in situations like this, whilst the new Farnborough hospital (QE?) even has a nice (if a hospital can be) new section specifically for Cancer patients (guess thats what made them bankrupt!).

Although my mum's cancer was very agressive and had already spread the team at the above hospital managed to get rid of it, alongside a couple of operations and hard Chemo/Radio in a highly supportive, comfortable environment alongside some compassionate nurses who assisted with advice and home care between my dad and two younger brothers.

In this day and age, and given how early it has been captured things should, touch wood! sort themselves out, if they managed to fix my mum (been C free for 4 years now) they should hopefully work the same magic for you smile

Yes I remember a 1 in three figure what made it stick my science teacher at school went round the class at the start of a lesson and patted one in three of us saying 'you' 'you'.... are going to get cancer lovely start to the lesson I thought!

I hope the early diagnosis gives her a good chance smile
