Gear selection issue - help!
Discussion
Hi all.
We have just returned from the classic rally in Laon, France and then the Spa Classic.
All in all 11 days, just under 1300 miles and not one single issue other than some water in the footwell as it did rain for 7 out of the 11 days.
So very pleased with the car.
However, ironically, on our way home from folkestone, my car decided it didn't like 1st, 3rd and 5th gear.
We were sat queuing to get on the train at france for an age and as so many checks were being performed. It was pretty hot and the car didnt get anyway near overheating, but it was warm for sure!
And it was then that the car didn't want to go in 1st to move off.
I have had an issue before but literally only once and then it sorted itself. It has done this a few times but never been a problem.
However this time I could not select 1st easily at all and 3rd just would not go in. 5th was not easy either.
I sometimes did the reserve trick (5th and then into 1st). This worked some times but not always.
Any ideas what this could be?
It had a new clutch not long ago, perhaps 5-10000 miles ago. It is a 98 500.
It was so so frustrating. It was the first time I have got really p***ed off with the car.
But I didnt bother trying to force it but just select 2nd and 4th. 5th did go but I had to move it far right and up.
any help is appreciated as always.

The most obvious is check the oil level.
But as it is the 1 ,3 , and 5 that are giving trouble, it is
probably the selector linkage requires adjustment.
Great thanks Dave. But as it is the 1 ,3 , and 5 that are giving trouble, it is

I will get my local specialist to have a look. He did say something about something being bent and that it could be causing the issue of gear selection.

Check your clutch master cylinder fluid level. Lost all my gears once because of a leaky gearbox slave cylinder.
Now thats interesting as my footwell was wet during the road trip. But I dont think it was clutch fluid as it rained basically every day in france/belgium. Plus it didnt smell of anything and the mats when I took them out to dry just drained water..But will defo get this checked. Thanks
