Ive had my car up for sale for just over 2 weeks and haven't had a single call. Ive been steadily reducing the price and I'm now at the point where I wouldn't want to discount it any further.

The ad is factual and there are loads of pictures and the price is now very competitive too.

Anybody have any advice on how to increase the desirability of the car?

I wont post a link to the ad because that would be naughty, but this is the text:

I'm regrettably selling my 2003 Mazda Mx5 1.8i with 91,000 on the clock.

Having just had the brakes overhauled, I was told our family will be growing and I should be swapping the car for a 4 seater, so here it is. Up for sale frown

It has a full service history (see bottom of page for details)

TAX 31/10/13
MOT 27/7/13

New rear discs and pads May 13
New front o/s calliper May 13 - front discs and pads serviced but not replaced.

All the tyres have lots of tread left (6mm on most worn) and are Cooper Zeon xtc Tyres.

The wheels have very minor curbing. (worst pictured)

The interior looks good for the age, though there is slight wear on the drivers seat.

The hood is in good condition aside from some wearing in the creases along the top of the windows. It is still watertight and has a heated glass rear screen.

The engine is smooth and quiet and still pulls nicely.

As far as the bodywork is concerned, it is good overall, but has some tiny dings here and there along with minor surface scratching, all consistent with age. The rear passenger sill has some bubbling.

£2450 or sensible offer.

Service history:
Registered 31/7/03
30/1/04 – 13,123
13/5/04 – miles not recorded
14/4/05 – 31,462
24/3/06 – 41,647
19/4/07 – 49,451
28/7/08 – 59,716
16/7/09 – 67,390 (cambelt)
8/7/10 – 74,576
27/7/11 – 81,712
25/7/12 – 87,790 (front pads)
16/5/13 – 90893 - rear discs and pads changed and front o/s calliper replaced

The fact that the MOT and tax are due soon might not be helping, mileage is a little high too.

It has only been two week though...

It reads like a list of bad points to me. I'd cut the bit about not changing the pads (what does serviced but not replaced actually mean?). Unless cooper tyres are amazing and I've not heard of them, I'd cut that too.

I'd write "The interior and hood look good for the age, with no leaks. Also has the heated glass rear screen which is much better than the early plastic ones."

The word "still" to me, for some reason suggests that it will fail eventually...

The rust is a major put off so I don't think you should mention it unless asked.

ETA it has only been two weeks and the weather has been awful though

"The rear passenger sill has some bubbling."

is a total run like hell for anyone who has done their homework on the MX5. I would not be putting that in an advert. Leave it for their inspection or fix it.

I could not agree more. Just got myself a rust free 1991 eunos and my first question to every seller was about the sill rust issue. Any mention of rust and I'd walk away.

Its rusty.

Ergo, anyone who knows their stuff will not want it.

Anyone who doesnt will be blinded by a list of things that are wrong with it.

Make it simple. age, miles history. I'd suggest the MOT and Tax do not help at all either.

Good, bright, clean photos. advertise in usual places.

If you want rid, make it £1999.

I have just bought a Mx5 and remember seeing your Ad and sorry I dismissed. Reasons I did
eg; mentioning things like scratches, dinks wear in the seats put me off ( what is mint to some people is different to others) I would of viewed your car if it read a bit more like this.. (I know you are being honest but some time people can be to honest..)
Good look with the sale fella and bang some new pics with it..,, It will look like a new Advert..
I hope you haven't took offence just my opinion.. :0 wink

I'm regrettably selling my 2003 Mazda Mx5 1.8i with 91,000 on the clock.

Above looks good but I'm lose the bit about the tyres Being Coopers. They are a budget brand and makes it sound like it might have been maintained on a budget. Just say the tyres have 6mm tread.

p.s. ask a mod nicely and they will delete this thread for you wink

Cheers for the advice chaps. I'm always too honest as I worry about the 'item not as described' rules on ebay.

I'll make some changes,

Fingers crossed.

Make sure you have lots of nice flattering photos of the car in a nice setting too. Not fuzzy ones at odd angles at the side of the road. Wash it and wax it and take it somewhere pretty.

Ultimately the rust would put me off, you are best off taking it out of the add and describing it in detail and providing pics to anyone who asks.

From having a look on Autotrader it would appear that £2450 is still quite a high price for what you are offering.

I am having the same problem mate frown

I have had my turbo'd Eunos for sale for over a week with no interest whatsoever. I thought it would fly out being what it is at this time of year, and I have priced it SUPER competitively with other MX5s.

I think maybe people are looking at holidays etc this time of year so are reluctant to spend wads of money on cars???

...In the next few weeks I'll be looking for a decent MX5 within the 2/3k bracket.

Just need to find out tomorrow whether everything is good at work.

The only issue is that a lot of the 'local' ones don't look too great.

So it might be a nice road trip biggrin

The market for a turbo'd Eunos is very small. Mine took ages to sell.

The one guy who did view it travelled miles and took it!

For whatever reason, there seems to be a glut of turbo/supercharged 5's for sale at the moment too, perhaps people upgrading to Prosche/Lotus etc over summer

Mileage...too high...rust...if it's like that on the outside, what is it like inside or underneath? TBH you make it sound as though there are too many issues...not a car I'd shell £2.5k on. At that end of the market I'd rather spend £500 more and get a lower mileage, cleaner example. Price it lower is the way to go...try a trade in valuation, even just WBAC and see what they offer...anything better than this from a private sale is a result.

Mileage is fine. 91k in 10 years is only 9k pa average and MX5 engines can handle massive mileages as they are over-engineered. Someone who doesn't know these cars might consider it high mileage however.
