More out of intrigue really.
Just received a couple of 1 litre Mobil 1 0W-40, although having spoken with Fernies the other day both 0-40 and 10-60 were mentioned depending to whom I spoke with.
What do you chaps use.
I use Mobil 1 15:50 Motorsport. This is now out of production, but I managed to secure a few 5L cans the other year. I would not personally use the 0:40, a 10:50 or 15:50 would be preferrable. FFG recommended the Fuchs 15:50 from Opie. This has been recommended to me also, I use Fuchs gearbox oil from Opie and would have no problem in using the 15:50 engine oil when my stock of Mobil 1 runs out. Mmmm... I've just replaced the pistons on my 500 as the small ends were making a noise on over-run at 50K !!....
before this I used all the top end oils.... the Fuch's 15/50's...and Valvoline 20/50's etc that Opie recomend... but knowing what I know now about the small ends and how they are fed (or not!).. I'm thinking I may go a tad thinner this time after running in.... If it's too viscos and too 'magnetic'. is this the esta bit?... I'm thinking it might be starving the small ends a tad??
Just food for thought

The chatter on mine came on quite quick.. between 43K miles and 50K miles whilst using Fuch's (silcolene) oil as recomended by Opie oils... is it related??
I called Fuch's and talked with their technical dept... they said it might be worth trying a thinner oil to ensure ingress into the small ends... but by that time the damage was done?.. I also called and mailed Opie oils but they didn't want to know or reply..... you pays your money and all that
Paul... yours hasn't started to chatter on over-run has it?.. around the 1.3K rpm mark??

Dunno, exhaust too loud. Hi TVR B, my Griff has been run on 15:50 and previously 20:50 for many tens of thousands of miles, still runs as sweet as anything. Don't think you can blame the 'thicker' oil for the chatter. Don't forget also that however highly tuned the RV8 engine is in our cars they are an older design and NOT the tightly tolerances high revving screamers around today that need the 0:30 fully synth! Also like Paul, my exhaust on my pre-cat keeps me entertained, so any minor chatter would not be heard. its quite a spacific noise.. not just the normal valve train noise... and has been found to be little ends by V8D and Power now.. it happens when the throttle is blipped, the rpm goes to say 3K.. and then drops back to tickover... but just before it get's there at arounf 1300 rpm.. they make the chatter noise??...
the tolerance on the small end is quite tight (for and old design of engine), but I think it's more the oils abuility to be 'flung' around the place as a lot of modern oils are designed to stick and remain on surfaces?.. that was their theory anyway... I know a good 1/3rd of the 500's make this noise.. but others don't?.. so could it be oil choice that make a differance?
It might not follow that giving the engine the top oil available will help all it's internal bit's last??... that said, the thicker the better for the bottom end as the tolerances here are quite big... so like everything TVR... it could be a compramise

I've been using Millers semi-synth CSS 20w60 for some time now with no little end issues.
For the last two oil changes I switched to Penrite HPR15, which is a fully synth 15w60.

Both good quality oils with zinc & at the thicker end of the scale, perfect for the RV8 in my opinion.
Old engine designs need a thicker oil than modern ones.
As the engine wears you need an even thicker to take up the clearances, at this point a thin oil is not a good idea as you'll experience excessive spill at the crank journals.

Valvoline mineral vR1 20w50 works for me .. If I wanted to spend more money it would be Millers 20w60 semi and the ultimate oil ..

I've used Millers CFS 15w/60 Fully Synthetic before when some came up at a good price, and a very good oil it is too.Millers 15w60 fully synthetic

But at nearly £50 for five litres it's hellish expensive.
That's why I've typically always gone with Millers CSS 20w/60 semi-synthetic, which is still a great oil but at £34 for five litres is far more affordable.
Then I discovered Penrite HPR15 15W/60, which is a top quality fully synthetic oil with zinc that competes directly with the expensive Millers CFS 15w/60.
Except the Penrite HPR15 15W/60 is only £31 for five litres!
That makes it cheaper than the Millers CSS semi-synth yet just as good as the ferociously expensive Millers fully synthetic oil.
I doubt you'll find a quality fully synthetic at a better price, & you'll definitely not find one in the higher viscosity grades with zinc that's so essential in the RV8.
That makes the Penrite HPR15 15W/60 fully synthetic an absolute no-brainer in my book.
