E500 thread - year 2000 on
Discussion
I just saw this for sale and felt like posting it.

Mercedes E500
AUTOMATIC black 54000 miles
Reg. Date: 2003
Mileage: 54,000
Location: United Kingdom
If you need a comfy cruiser then one of these for £6k - plus lots of spare cash for fuel and repairs - has to be a better bet than a £20k E220 cdi?
They are rare though. Has anyone owned one?

I've had one for over three years now - an estate with tons of toys.
It's now eight years old and on 117k-ish miles and everything works just fine.
The only real concern for me is that one of the airmatic struts gives up.
Other than that it's a great family bus/cruiser/wafter.
Last weekend was Dorset, the previous one was Norfolk. 500 miles with wife and kids in extreme comfort.

A car from the peak of Mercedes quality control (not).
Check the wheel arches and lips for rust first.
The 210's were very bad for rust. As were many Mercs of the 1998-2000 era (I had a rusty 99 C Class and have seen plenty of others of that era).Check the wheel arches and lips for rust first.
I've heard of the odd 211 with some but can't recall seeing any.
Quality was getting back on track with these. Wisdom says go for a facelift but mine is fine.
I have a facelift (2007) E500 estate. The only things to deal with are airmatic struts and the gearbox. I have had both but luckily, a warranty paid for both issues.
The gearbox was £1,500 for a new valve body/conductor plate and the airmatic strut was £1,200 fitted.
It also had a set of front balljoints which cost £500 fitted with four wheel alignment.
Anything before 2006/7 had a five speed box which makes the gearbox repair about £500 when it goes if it hasn't been done already. It is also a 5.0 litre as opposed to the 5.5 in the later cars which adds 80bhp and a heap more torque.
Despite it letting me down a couple of times, I love it to bits and have not driven anything that comes close to the comfort/waftiness and brute force for the money. Iron fist in velvet glove really sums it up.

211 E classes can rust. The arch design had a lip that traps dirt between the arch and the liner. Seen a lot of 211s with rusty arches. Shame as it spoils an excellent car
