Induction vs Exhaust?
Discussion
As in the title, I am about to buy a mk2.5 MX5 1.8 sport and can't help myself from choosing a few mods before I've even driven it!
I know that I will want a sportier note, so need to decide whether a K&N Typhoon kit or a Racing Beat exhaust is the way to go.
Having never bought an induction kit or aftermarket exhaust before, what sort of sound does each provide? I'm looking for a nice deep growl on acceleration but it's important that it's not too loud and I don't fancy a drone on motorways.
At the moment I'm leaning towards the exhaust. If I do go that way, what is a better choice, the single tip or the dual tip Racing Beat?

Intake or exhaust - the sound you will get will be very different. If you only want it to be noisier on acceleration then the induction kit is the way to go. You will hardly notice it unless you are accelerating and the harder you accelerate the noisier it will get. The exhaust however will be noisy a lot more often; noisier on acceleration but also noisier drive-by/cruise. It won't be a lot noisier though as the mid-pipe & cat will take away most of the "motorway drone".
The noise difference however - induction will be a raspy growl whereas the exhaust will basically sound the same but deeper and a bit louder.
On mine I have the Racing Beat Duals (fantastic quality - mine is nearly 10 years old and still looks like new) but I also have a Larini Sports mid-pipe and Larini Sports cat. I do kind of have an induction kit - a big supercharger

I have the induction on mine and it is a bit louder, a nice sound in the lower rev range (low and bassy), but to be honest the Racing Beat would give a more awesome sound. I've heard lots of good things about them, and if you're just going for the backbox it's not meant to be annoyingly loud.
I don't know if you're a member of MX5Nutz but there's a Racing Beat group-buy that looks to be going ahead soon (20% off any item) so if you want one that might be a good opportunity for you

What lazza said, the noises both make are very different. The noise difference however - induction will be a raspy growl whereas the exhaust will basically sound the same but deeper and a bit louder.

personally I'm not a fan of induction noise, but love exhaust noise. So even though I have a supercharger, I've retained the OEM airbox to cut out as much induction noise as possible.
It works too, if you didn't know any better you'd think my car was stock.
Had an 02 plate mk 2.5 1.6 many years ago, put a K&N typhoon on it...the sound was awesome and it also definitely gave more power, at times it seemed to make the front end lift up a little. The exhaust was standard and looking back was the only car that I have not put a new exhaust on. I put one on the MG, Elise and Corsa...it made them all too loud and monotonous at speed on the motorway. I'd go induction...you can always take it off easily too and sell it on if you sell the car.
