Hi Guys just went to the car to take it to Santa Pod, ignition on, pump primes, but no cranking of the starter, am sure have seen this in times past on here but cant find it at the mo, is it something to do with relays and the alarm, ran it yesterday with no issues

I think the immobiliser has two relays inside one does pump the other does start relay so you could well have the pump running but no turn-over. Have you tried thumping the top of the dash...has been known to work. Do it when you have pressed the button (pump now running) and whilst turning to start position.

Good luck
Steve

I can't remember exactly and can't check on mine, (Megasquirt) but the 2 relays above the battery on the snake of cables, 1 does the ECU and the other the starter from memory.

Swap them over and see if it turns over.

If yes, then you need a relay, possibly!

Good luck.

Are you sure the battery is fully charged, no clicks from the solenoid as you try and start it?

Cheers will have a look at those relays, was trying to get dash top off to get to the alarm, yes battery fully charged, pump primes but nothing else, typical when you want to go out!!!

I think you are wasting your time taking the dash off IMO.

It's probably something fundamental.

Check if there is power at the starter solenoid on the trigger lead while someone is cranking, that will confirm that there isn't power there.

Can't remember if that circuit is fused, I'll take a look on mine.

Fuse 21 is "ignition and crank", a 25 amp fuse.

Swap with No 1, dip beam.

Thanks, will check to solenoid, swapped relays over can hear pump relay drop in and the other relay is clicking when the key is turned

Mad M, Rugby thanks, however its the KISS syndrome, there is an additional relay someone has fitted in with the other 2, not sure what it does but has an inline blade fuse direct from the battery, when I was checking the fan relays last week,I must have disturbed it in all the rats nest that is in there, found it a bit loose and dicky, pulled it out and put it back together and all is ok, will replace it now cos it is ste, but would like to know what it does, anyone any ideas ??

Thanks for you guys help tho

The relay could be a "hot start" fix.

I have one of those - had the same issue with it coming loose once.
Yes, it was part of the hot start fix in my case.

Cheers Bill, going to replace the holder today, the electrics are bad enough without adding to them with a crappy fuse holder, serves me right for messing about in there last week, but at least the car was at home with plenty of tea available......

Use this forum a fair bit for "chatting" but when it comes to a problem, people are brilliant with their help, so CHEERS all

Unbelievably TVR didn't fit a dedicated relay on the starter circuit, prefering instead to relay on the tiny low amp relay buried deep inside the immobiliser.

TVR then sealed the fate of this little inadequate relay by wiring the immobiliser back to front causing early failure of its contact points.

The two metal relays hanging in the footwell are for the ECU & fuel pump, so nothing to do with the starter circuit whatsoever.

You should ignore these and move on to the starter solenoid circuit which is where your problem resides.

The starter circuit & the fuel pump circuits are both routed through the Meta immobiliser which houses a couple of relays.

One relay for the fuel pump & one for the starter circuit, being independent it's quite possible to get fuel pump activation but no starter function when you disengage the immobiliser.

In fact because the relay responsible for the starter circuit carries more amps than the fuel pump immobiliser relay it is indeed the one that fails first.

As a cheap down & dirty fix there is nothing to stop you simply bypassing the immobiliser on the starter circuit only, the immobiliser will still protect the car as it will still control the fuel pump.

All it will mean is you'll be able to crank the car without disengaging the immobiliser, the car still wont start until you hit the immobiliser button because there will be no fuel.

Bypassing the immobiliser on the starter circuit is simple enough, but I do recommend adding a relay back in, more the protect the contacts on the ignition switch than anything.

After this simple bypass you'll find the car will start perfectly and be far more reliable, it's a shame TVR never wired the immobiliser correctly as this one error seems to be by far the biggest cause of no starts in Chims & Griffs.

Pretty much every week, another owner comes on here with the same symptoms, fortunately like most issues with these cars it can be solved quickly & simply at very little cost.

PM me if you need more detail.

My issue is slightly different in as much i don't even get ignition lights never mind not cranking ......only happens every so often, but I disarm the alarm, key in ignition and turn the key and I get nothing, no lights on the dash or anything, usually turn key off re arm and disarm the alarm and then i get ignition and pump priming, but sometimes if I leave it and turn the ignition key off then back on I get the lights, so possibly a relay or the alarm, and to add into the mix mine is not the Meta unit but a toad .....not left me stranded yet but it could frown

Thanks for the info, when I operated the immobiliser I could hear the pump relay operate and click off when pressurised turning the key, I could hear a relay in the footwell clicking in, was going to check its output but the missus was still in bed to turn the key for me, so when fiddling about waiting for her I came across this bad blade fuse holder and the additional relay, after putting it back together all was ok, I understand your comment ref the Meta output and thanks,I will see if I can replicate this fault when I change the crap fuse holder later today
