What can be done? If anything?
Here is the article in question: http://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/heritage/dunnott...
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a copy of the paper to see if it was printed in there too.

Invoice them! Use this http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/index.php... to give you an idea of rates.
I'm not entirely sure.
I supplied Dunnottar Castle with the image to use in their press release for Visit Scotland's article and as far as I know the castle haven't sent that out to anyone else, but maybe Visit Scotland did? So if that was the case I don't know if they were within their rights to do so?

Unless you assigned copyright to them, no. But 99% of people don't know about copyright and either think that because it's been given to them it's theirs to do anything with, or most commonly 'Well I paid for it so it's mine'. Which is true in most things but not photos! The newspaper might even have asked the sender 'Do you have copyright' and they said 'Yes'. If it bothers you, give them a nice call and find out what happened.

I've emailed the custodian of the castle (who I've been dealing with) to find out who she passed the image on to.It doesn't really bother me, but it would bother me less if I was given credit or a got a little something out of it. After all, i'm sure the Scotsman has more money than me
