Had this issue last year, told that heat over time will make your coil and small management block(not sure correct term)faulty and engine will cut out until engine bay cools down,so sorted it by changing the coil and small management block.

Today we travelled approx 30-40miles,stopped for a quick drink(approx half hour)set off and she started doing it again, cut out during drive, pull over twiddle with spade connections(not sure this did anything,as all looked well),starts up,then on odd occassion had to wait 2-3mins,then she started?

Sometimes there would be 5-10 miles between engine cut outs?

Any ideas, or do you think the coil or block may be dodgy, and need replacing again, and if so,which would you bet against the other.

This isn't the answer, but I always suspect the ruddy immobiliser at times like this.......

I am thinking of taking this out of the equation at some point any way,so fob only locks and unlocks the car.

Difficult to say really, i would suspect coil or amp over immobiliser as its cutting out when running.

One of the benefits of a new modern ecu, takes these things out of the equation and you can have up to date modern coil packs. A nice aftermarket ecu would probably do wonders for your new engine. wink

Hope this isnt going to put a stop to Tuesdays fun.

Problem is at moment, most of my jounery to RR is on motorway, which is not good for engine cutting,RR will be done at some point if i cant resolve the cut out issue..

Ahhhh ... now you know the fun that I had with mine! Mine turned out to be a broken wire in the loom just before the loom went into the ECU connector housing... frown

If you think it's a duff connector or cable get it running and give the loom some pull and twist you should find out if its the wireing

it interesting that you regard coil over heating is causing your problem, when I bought my car the previous owner had moved the coil to next to the wiper motor (top right in this pic)

He said that it was to avoid coil overheating by sitting it in an airflow.
others have commented that there wasn't a problem that needed solving in the first place, I've not moved it back as its doing no harm where it is and hasnt caused a problem.

just had same issue - changed coil and ignition amp (the small management block you talk of) and all fine now - in fact running very well indeed. Took a while to find it as it was intermittent - but a very cheap fix in the end. Lucas DAB118 ignition amp and bosch coil (can;t remember the number but easy to find on here)

Tucking the coil in the corner right over the exhaust manifold actually looks like a hotter position than the original location to me.

The heat source is a higher temperature, agreed, but the air flow will probably be higher from the bonnet vents. The previous owner did install a aluminium heat shield underneath the coil so it should benefit from that, you can't see that from the picture.
As said, it hasn't created a problem so I will leave alone.
I also have the modwise 2 speed fan controller so under bonnet temps remain steadier than the otter switch cycling, mine very rarely gets to full speed, so much so, when it does it suprises me.

Although with the extreme summer temps we are currently enduring, who knows......... I may even take my jumper off.

Does the rev counter drop faster than the engine RPM? If it does then the amp, dizzy trigger or wiring is at fault on the coil primary.

My original amp failed at the end of last year, now on its third replacement, first was a britpart, then a Lucas new stock, and now on a Lucas old stock (I think), but that also gave up the ghost, I refitted it after everything cooled down, and it drove home without a stutter. I need to do further test miles to see if it is ok now, but my confidence in the car is now low. Have bought a Unipart version and what I am sure is a Lucas old stock (box says made in England) as backups. If these fail, what are the options regarding upgrading to coil packs/engine management etc?

I had a similar problem and it took a day to sort, it was the ign amp mount bracket earth point creating a high resistance when hot. I removed the screw that holds the ring terminal on and replaced the terminal, cleaned all routes to the plenum (coil bracket and bolts) a nice coating of Vaseline on assembly and has been ok since.
This may not be the fault but you never know
hope this has helped somebody.
