It’s that time of the year – Train ticket renewal.
Discussion
That time of the year when my annual train ticket is up for renewal. No pay rise or bonus for the last 2 years and my ticket has gone up nearly £900….
Mines now £3100.
Anyone paying more than me?
That’s for me to get to London, I then walk from Liverpool street to Trafalgar Square as I can’t afford the £4000 they want to add for the tube!
It’s a huge huge chunk of my salary!
And i just saw an add for a contract role in central London for £200 to £250 a day....

Holy crap!!!! £4k?!?!?!?!?
It's time to start thinking about moving abroad!!! Just two examples:
- Austria (Vienna) - £383 per year. For everything. (Bus, Tram, Underground, Trains). I think another £80 gets you the very outskirts of Vienna.
Owning a car in Vienna is however quite expensive. My BMW 116d is about €1700 per year to insure. (It's the reason I went for a 116d. I originally ordered the 120d but then was quoted €2800 per year in insurance), but overall it's still cheaper than prices in London. That and the rent is cheaper and the quality of life much better. (IMHO).
- Gibraltar - £0.98 per litre for diesel. It goes up and down a wee bit but I've had it as low as 89p and as high as £1.10. We all complained. Either way, I travel constantly and my fuel bill is about £70 per month, tops.
The downside is Gib isn't the best place in the world to live but you have Spain and that is amazing. Love the country, the people and the climate.

Bloodly hell, although I was paying £2400 a year in fuel for the commute for the last few years, add in the depreciation and maintenance and I'd be in the same ballpark.
My geography and knowledge of London is poor, but have you considered a Motorbike / Scooter? has to be more fun than a train?

Well out of morbid curiosity I just looked at a commute from Bristol to London Paddington. If you want to get there in a reasonable time (i.e. go through Reading). It's over 10k a year!
The extra £800 to add zones 1-6 tube seems cheap by comparison. Upsettingly, I know of people who do this kind of commute.

£5428, if I went from Sittingbourne to St Pancras.
£4505, if I went from Sittingbourne into London Vic.
Which is why I drive to Bexley and then get the train, although that costs over £1600 a year to go ~8 miles..
You could ride those 8 miles in under half an hour, and save £1600p.a£4505, if I went from Sittingbourne into London Vic.
