I have a tt x50 and need some extra go in it.
Has anyone got an X50 and had it modified with ease and no problems.
Im not too worried about the cost but i do want it to be 100% reliable.
Thanks guys.

Didnt Daz just get his TT demonised..

iirc X50 would put out 520ish BHP with his ECU mod (cant recall much of the details, sure someone else will be along soon)

or, just go to RUF, and ask them to play, costs will be greatly increased, but so will warranty and reliability.

What are we coming to when an X50 is too slow

Kudos!

Afraid not. Car running as it left the factory. Won't be doing it in the foreseeable future either as I took out the extended warranty for years 3 & 4.

Rich 1231 and Rods have recently tweaked standard turbos. GuyR and GT2Henry have recently tweaked GT2s.

I believe 550hp is possible fron an X50 via DMS et al with an ecu upgrade and sports exhaust, the 520 figure pertains to a modified non X50 turbo I think.

If you fancy the RUF route, you could talk to GuyR on here as Daz said who had his GT2 tinkered with by RUF to 550 bhp.

Appreciate that,

Im going to chat to GuyR and find about the Ruf conversion. Ive emailed Ruf a couple of times but had no response.

Am i right in thinking the X50 and GT2 engines are identical with just a slight ecu mod for the boost?

This is my understanding.

On the subject of Ruf, I know with Guys car to get it to 550 "Ruf" bhp, there was more than tweaking involved, It involved changing the turbos, exhausts etc. Henry's conversion by APP in Amsterdam was significantly cheaper using the original turbos, but as Henry says, Guy's is quicker.

A friend (who was in our Le Mans convoy) had his X50 breathed on by Techart (incl new exhaust)... he can't say enough good things about it. Apparently takes it to 540-550bhp, sounds absolutely amazing and transforms an already impressive performance range.

The one downside is that it cost him nearly £9k.... so DMS looks like a bargain.

Recently had Rob from DMS tweek my standard Turbo,it has certainly made a huge difference 510bhpish.
I took my youngest lad out in the car after DMS had finished it,after a short drive he said "dad i feel sick, please stop doing that boost thing" too late all over the new mats and will only go in the car if the Mrs is driving now.

Sorry to hear of the Rob!

I have been thinking about all the talk recently about the different tuners and I think tuning firms fall in to two camps:

1) DMS, AMD, etc who offer ecu enhancement with no mechanical changes apart from the optional sports exhaust.

2) Tuning houses like RUF, Techart, Gemballa, etc who do ecu stuff in conjunction with new turbos, exhaust, and uprated this that and the other.

Both camps state similar power figures but massively different costs. I think you always get what you pay for, but conversely you never hear of complaints about DMS et al upgrades or the increase in power compromising mechanical longevity or reliability of the standard components, though only time will tell I think.

Its an interesting debate that will rage on

Indeed it will, it'll be interesting to see the physical evidence @ VMax...

Come to v-max and see!

They are quite a lot quicker, though Guy's velocity is aided by his 'Snoop Dogg' wheels I think!

Daz should be along in a minute to give his opinion.

Im worried when just boost alone is raised the fuel mixtures change slightly and at high revs in high gears this could see the end to me pistons.

Im not sure how these tuners can properly test correct mixtures and heat build up in a piston chamber at high speeds.

Vmax it is, i think this will help me decide.

Conversions producing blue smoke out the tail pipes is going to be a big no no.

I don't know if Craig W has filled all places yet, at the last count there were 2 left I think and people have been dropping out in the mean time.

E-mail him on:

teamvmax@hotmail.com

He is away at the mo, so he may not reply straight away.

Thanks

Word of warning, chaps.

My semi-abandonned plan to extract 'grail performance' from my own beetle was somewhat flummexed the other day when, as I stood admiring Mr.Hindley's latest race car, I noticed my previously-thought dream car lurking in the shadows.

It was a car I'd been out in before and trumpeted of loudly and with much vigour on these hallowed pages: a 993tt which had been given the full 550 treatment and with Phil himself at the wheel, had redefined my parameters for road car fast, except that...

...the gear box was mashed. The car had run ok for a while but by not reinforcing the appropriate oily bits, voila.

Ok, hardly the end of the world but still a kicker: even with my current set up, I had been persauded to go for the ballsier clutch so is it not the case that maybe longevity beyond certain levels really does suffer unless detailed component level exchanges/upgrades are invested in...as opposed to the relatively painless 'chip & play' solutions that are around.

Hmmm...
