my Mums Fiancée bought an 08 Golf Mk5 GTi earlier in the year and i'm starting to think its been clocked.

the cars had the EML on intermittently with nowhere able to diagnose the fault, the cars been in several places and went through a Terraclean service to clear all the old carbon in the engine to see if it helped, it did not. the car loses all power when the light comes on.

the car is showing only 21k now and was 19k when he bought it but i've been in the engine bay and the wiring at the diverter valve has been played about with and re-soldered at some point which throws out the story of an old woman owning it prior to the garage selling it as it was to powerful for her. I think a dump valves been installed at some point.

the cars on irish plates altough this i feel may be irrelevant. no service history either!!

OP, I've edited the post slightly to remove any naming and shaming. Feel free to add info but please keep the dealer name out of it.

I know it's a relatively new car but worth attempting to verify the message through the MOT history...

Where in Scotland are you located?

I've got VCDS and happy to give it a scan and see what faults have been logged and at what mileage they occurred.

What makes you think it's clocked exactly, the things you mention are not exactly conclusive.

Has it been checked on the NMR.
Have you called VW to do a check and get any dealer visits confirmed, be it servicing or warranty work etc

What does it say on the V5, how many owners?

I presume he got it cheap since there's no service hostory, or atleast I hope he did!!!

Was it a VAG dealer or a local garage it was purchased from, big difference in the way you can deal with it, also I'm sure if you chum someone up that works at a VW dealer and give them the details of the car reg, vin or whatever it will be on their system somewhere....

I'll be getting the V5c form from him later today as he's out working and this is the first I've been on here, I'll try the MOT history Check with this later.

AGK - i'm in East Kilbride as is the car but I've had it scanned by a friend who has the VCDS stuff and nothing showed as it was not bringing the light on at the time, he's since been to busy to get a look. will try when he's back from Spain.

also thanks for the VW number al give them a shout.

THE DIRECT.GOV.UK MOT check coming back with nothing on the car, not sure where to go until VW open again tomorrow.

Was it Mot'd in Northern Ireland or the UK mainland?

Its been mot'd head e twice, and using the vw number above I've uncovered a discrepancy in millage that shows it was 19k on June 16th 2012 and then 15k on the 25th, the garage showing the 15k on VWs system says they have no record of it being in there last year so VW sending the proof out in writing.

not as much of a fettle as i thought but still illegal....

sorry for punctuation, typing on my phone on the bus 😓

Wsn't there some scam where cars sold through Northern Ireland would get a new V5 so you couldn't see how many previous RK's there'd been?

Sure you are using the correct info on the VOSA database.

The number on the green slip wont get you anywhere if it's the one he's been left with
