I want an interesting route to Carlisle. Help me out
Discussion
I'm on a course in July near Carlisle. Usually I'd just get a hire car but I fancy having a good run out for a change. It's not very often I get the car and the day to myself.
Ill be heading from the east yorkshire end of the m62. The main roads up are either A1 end or M6 end. But am open to suggestions on routes between the 2. I've got a volvo s70R. It's not massively fast but will be better than a 1.4 diesel fiesta I'd get from hertz!!
Cheers

A1 to Scotch Corner, A66 briefly to Barnard Castle where the fun begins. 20 miles of B6277 from Middleton-in-Teesdale to Alston is heaven. From Alston either head for Penrith via Hartside or north towards Hexham on the A686. If you have lots of time, turn east of the A686 for fun on the deserted roads on top of the moors around Allendale.
Also possible is turning off the A1 at Ripon and taking the the very good A6108 via Masham and Leyburn to Richmond before cutting across to Barnard Castle. As ever, depends how much free time you have.

Yes indeed. On my way back from Scotland earlier this year I encountered a modified GT4 leaving Alston and we had a superb spirited run across the fells. Mostro said:

Both of those are a bit of a detour though. The A689 to Brampton is a nice challenge and the logical choice as well. From there one can either go via the A69 or the A689/B6264. Good shout on the B6277/A689 approach. The road up past Middleton is utterly fantastic, smooth surface, sweeping curves. Fun even in a "boring" car. Watch out for cops in the villages on the A689.
Out of interest OP - where "near" Carlisle? If its away to the west of the city the advice might be to use a completely different route!

Not personally a fan of the B6160 all the way from Bolton Abbey to Aysgarth - too narrow, bumpy and busy. If you get stuck behind something, you could be there for hours!
But it depends whether the OP wants a gentle drive through some beautiful countryside (Wharfedale) or some proper press-on driving opportunities with moorland views thrown in (Teesdale)

Again totally agree with this, also from East Yorkshire head up to Malton and get yourself on the B1257. From Helmsley to Great Broughton it is a superb stretch of road and then after that head west over to Bernard Castle and get on the B6277Out of interest OP - where "near" Carlisle? +1 for the East Yorks route too. Depending where you are starting from exactly, pick up the B1248 near Wetwang (A614 to Bainton maybe?) and follow that through to Malton and then B1257 as above. From Stokesley, bit of an arse to get across to and around Darlo but then pick up the A67 to Barnard Castle and you're away.Has the makings of an epic route!

A67 can be joined near Crathorne, small village just to the west of Stokesley next to the A19. This takes you to Darlington and beyond to Barnard Castle.Has the makings of an epic route!
