Which hand do you hold your knife in?

Due to someone elses comment in the lick your knife thread, which hand do you hold your knife in?

I'm right handed but hold my knife in my left hand, I can just about do it the other way round, but not very well.

Is there a 'correct' way to hold a knife? (apart from by the handle obviously)

I was taught to hold the fork in my left hand, knife in the right, as it is on the table, even though I am left handed - although that makes non sense either, since i would shovel my food with my strongest/co-ordinated hand..

If I am cutting bread, or a joint of meat, I always carve with the knife in my left hand..

Yes, in your right hand with your index finger running along the top of the handle towards the blade.

im right handed, and hold my knife in my left hand

like someone to tell me this is wrong, other than for historical reasons that are now not relevent
and explain it to my mum who brought me up as a single parent
who happens to have been born with one hand
so would struggle to demonstrate to me the other way round!
would be a very intresting conversation i would be having afterwards

the reality is it hasnt done me any harm, and doesnt impact on other peoples lives, other than those who like to like to look down on others for no apparent reason than they believe they are better than others

I've never actually tried eating with my knife on the left.

No one taught me, I just always have. For me it was probably something to do with wanting the sharpest implement in the hand with the best control (as mentioned above by celticpilgrim when carving)... if I was left handed then I'd probably hold the knife in my left

I am left-handed but my knife goes in my right hand. It just came naturally to me.

I'm pretty much ambidextrous and often swap between left and right, though generally start with the knife in my right hand, saves moving the food on the plate or the plate itself.

Fork in the left knife in the right, as it is set on a table.

However, I do often use my fork in the right if it is something which doesn't need cut, so no knife.

I found when living in the US that to use both implements together is consider bad form, that you should cut the food fork-left, knife-right, then swop the fork to your right hand to pick up and eat the food, bugger that, I risked being considered uncouth and ate the way I always have.
