Watched a bit of the programme 'Search for Liberty Bell 7' on Quest... the description said it was about someone called Gus Griffen...

Much more of this and the first man on the moon will be William Armstrong... thus are dark ages born.

Guenter Wendt, the "Pad Fuhrer", reckoned that the external hatch jettison handle cover may have come off the spacecraft during parachute deployment, and the firing handle itself snagged by something after splashdown, possible chute shroud lines.

Evidence was inconclusive once the Mercury was recovered from the Atlantic, however. The internal hatch jettison button supposedly required a pretty heavy, deliberate thump to fire it.

I didn't see the programme, and my knowledge of the event doesn't extend much further than having watched The Right Stuff - but I suspect if anyone really thought he was to blame for the loss of the Mercury 4 capsule - he wouldn't have been trusted with the roles within the Gemini and Apollo programmes that he subsequently was.

Well actually the point of my post was that they got the astronaut's name wrong!

I think we get that.

Surely the contoversy over what caused Grissom's Mercury capsule hatch to blow prematurely is more fun to discuss than some muppet of a journalist who can't spell the man's name though ?

It was probably discussed the last time the programme was shown - my news was much more novel smile

I can think of a man called Grifffen who I'd prefer to come to the fiery end that Gus Grissom didn't deserve though.

I have checked my database and can find no one called 'Grifffen'.

I have an idea for a film, one of those post-apocalyptic ones. It's called 'The Last Man Who Can Actually Spell', and I think I'm in the shortlist nuts

Ah well if it was blue and not silver then it came from a scrapyard which is why it didn't fit properly.
