Hi Dave
Simple trick to get TDC, get a wet tissue and remove plug 1, jam it in the spark plug hole and turn the crank until it fire's out, job done mate, good luck

Number 6 happens at the same time too - number 6 is at TDC (exhaust) when No 1 is at TDC (compression).

So if No 6 is more convenient to get to, use that.

On my engine the timing marks on the pulley are about 20 degrees out so I have a stuck-on graticule so I can set it with the strobe lamp. To check this you need to dial in TDC on 1 or 6 - a tricky job. Most people just trust the marks.

To get exact TDC I like to use a plastic drinking straw. Works like a screwdriver but does no damage.
