Having trouble connecting Vaio to Viera tv by HDMI cable

I have a Sony Vaio and i am trying to play lovefilm films on my new viera smart tv, however when i swith the vaio screen output to, projector, extended, or monitor view a message comes up saying "external device not detected"
i can connect by vga but quality is poor, and sound is still through the laptop speakers.
Any ideas please

alternatively, any ideas how to connect from the media server option on the viera wirelessly, i have gone to the streaming section on the laptop and think i have set that up ok, but i am unsure what to tell the laptop to do once the film starts playing, how does it find the streaming content

all sorted now

i have 2 x viera tvs
it wouldnt connect to the plasma via hdmi so i presume i had to change something in the tv s it worked straightforwardly on the newer viera
