Best Alloys for a 996
Discussion
My 996 Targa has the what I believe were standard 17" multispoke alloys. They are pleasant enough but to me look a little small and understated for the car. I fancy getting another set of wheels and using the current ones as winter wheels with some appropriate tyres. Which wheels do you think set the 996 off best chaps?
There seem to be plenty available on Ebay at the moment!

18 inch turbo alloys
Really?I thought they were the least attractive feature on my turbo! (They look really dated in my opinion).
The trouble is, bar a few exceptions, Porsche are terrible at wheel design and there are very few aftermarket wheels that suit the cars lines, and that don't look too 'barry'.
If you're going OE, GT3 alloys

If going away from OE, BBS

ETA - just notice you said targa which makes it a mk2. Not sure what wheels go best on a mk 2. Possbily GT3 mk 2, but they're very rare and expensive.

Thanks for the opinions all. It seems the five spoke Carrera ones are a lot cheaper (£400-500) and more readily available so that'll probably what I plump for. A few on ebay at the mo though if anyone on here are getting rid of any do shout up.
Interesting thought though... if there are lots of people upgrading and selling the five spokes on ebay what are they buying as a replacement?

Indeed. They work on the Turbo, but that's it. On a narrow body, I'd happily shoot on sight, anyone who fits these to their car*.I thought they were the least attractive feature on my turbo! (They look really dated in my opinion).

*I seem to be on a roll of upsetting the more sensitive Porsche owners on here today. For that I make no apologies whatsoever

OE GT3 alloys are probably the ugliest wheel Porsche have made.I thought they were the least attractive feature on my turbo! (They look really dated in my opinion).

This should give you some interesting views on wheels.

Interesting point on the sidewall height. Should I expect the ride to deteriorate noticeably with 18's vs 17's?
I have a 996 Targa and it's on 18" Carrera wheels. I think they look spot on and, as others have mentioned, are easy to clean.I wouldn't worry about the ride quality. Admittedly it's all relative and a matter of preference but I certainly don't find it too harsh. At risk of going off ona slight tangent, many people reckon the recommended 36/44 tyre pressures are too high so you can improve ride quality by dropping those a little.
