I've just signed up to the RiTMO rating function on http://www.cyclingweekly.cc/.

It can be synched with Strava or you can upload your ride GPS files manually. It rates rides in a way that supposedly compares your performance to how others would do - a score of 0 means you're very strong and this goes down to 25. Pretty interesting I think as means you can compare your performance on a ride you've done with other rides you've done to see where your strong or improving. Would be interesting to hear how accurate users consider it.

Hell on toast thats a god awful website, I hope they didnt pay for it. I was intrigued so handed over all my personal data to the great data collection god in the sky and signed up.

Is age, gender or weight factored in?

No. Just like a golf handicap, RiTMO is based on how you actually perform not on predictors of performance such as age, weight, power output, fitness or heart rate etc. All that matters is how quickly you cover the ground.
which in the grand scheme of things means my score of 6.2 is fk all use to anything...

Quite literally... rofl ...at this bit.

This is why I'm currently sticking to off-road (while I lose some weight and get myself fitter) - to avoid the scorn of 'pro' road cyclists.

Even when I do get back on the road, I'm gonna keep my legs hairy tongue out

Don't get me wrong its great people are cycling but why there needs to be more and more ways 'measuring' yourself against everyone else I do not know. As far as I am concerned its another tick in the box of people who want to compete, but lack the balls, will power or whatever to actually pin a number on and race.

There is a ranking system in place and it works quite well already, its the category ranking system. They don't do this in other sports, they don't arm people with a rating so they can compare themselves against people actually competing. Tennis for example, you either play tennis and have an LTA rating, or you play tennis and you don't, there is no scoring system to measure the bloke who hits a few balls down the park as it isn't required. The same as this isn't.

At the moment I use a simple Cateye wired computer, and keep a 'cycling diary' to record mileage/route/weather conditions and my times. I'd like to get a Garmin GPS to make it easier to compare me to myself on any given route. I'm not so bothered about comparisons with other people, but that might be a bit of additional fun occasionally.

The biggest drawback of a hand written log is retrieving that 'lap record', or recalling an exact route to repeat it for comparison. This is where Strava would help. I've signed up, and uploaded this year's data manually, but that doesn't allow me to add route data so I can't draw any meaningful comparisons from it. That Garmin purchase is looking more and more tempting.

I just use my phone. As long as its fully charged, it can track for several hours. GPS and a little bit of data doesn't really use that much data, the real battery killer when using a phone as a GPS is screen on time. Start recording, lock it and screen off, stick it in my backpack and off I go smile

I suspect that most people who race pay very little attention to accumulating Strava KOM's etc. I'm certainly much less bothered nowadays, but still find it very useful. I agree all the online 'competition' stuff is nonsense, but if it means people have a way of gaining a rough assessment of their ability which might give them the courage to try racing then so much the better.

I see it a bit like the difference between racing cars competitively and going round in circles on track days. Much less BS in racing (whether it's cars or bikes) as results speak for themselves, but it's not for everyone. Both sports feature large numbers of blokes with cash and an inherent need to brag about something, so it's natural that people will try to exploit this market - just take a look at the MSV 'How Fast' days for a direct equivalent.

I'm surprised you have time to post such a sorry little rant given that you are obviously deep in preparation for the stage round Corisca this weekend..

Good one.

I suppose its the only way they know to make people feel included, just no idea why its required in cycling yet not in other sports.

It was fun before they put all this into place, its not needed. If you want to compete, you can, the systems are in place, if you don't, then just enjoy what you do without the need of a rating out of ten or whatever it is.

But it will get more people into racing and the cat systems ( thats full of drug using cheats btw ) which sadly is not much fun is it...

Can't see any harm here tbh.
