Hi all,

I currently run a 2010 CAAD9 with a BB30 compatible frame, with FSA crank and chainset. I've been running this for a couple of years and I'm treating the bike to a few upgrades, one of which is that I'd like to run an Ultegra front chainset, and perhaps take the opportunity to do some 'preventative upgrades' to the bottom bracket bearings (c) while everything is apart (in man speak, this is just an excuse to buy cool shiny things).

So, to go along with my new Hope Pro Hubs that I'm using as part of my new wheel build, I have my eyes on a Hope Bottom Bracket, I haven't decided on stainless or ceramic yet, but I've hit a stumbling block as to what exactly is compatible with what, it seems a bit of a minefield.

So, if I want to run this bottom bracket:

With this front chainset:

On a BB30 frame, what do I need to do? From my initial research I think I need some form of adapter so that the BB30 shell that sits in my frame will take a threaded bottom bracket, but which one?

Info, pictures, and links would be a mighty help at this stage!

Thanks

Iain

The bottom bracket you listed is not BB30, so it won't work. You need a BB30 bottom bracket adapter to run the hollowtech chainset

Such as http://wheelsmfg.com/bb-30-shims-shimano.html

To be fair, it will be a downgrade if you use that crank. You should be looking for secondhand Cannondale Hollowgram SI or SISL or SISL2 crank, they are one of the best (lightest and stiffest) cranks available, but over £600 if you want to buy new in Europe. Less from USA

Why not just fit ceramic bearings in the bb30 shell, and then run the adaptors to change from bb30 to 24mm spindles, just adding extra weight and complexity. Why not run a bb30 chainset, better q-factor and less weight.

I looked into changing the crank on my CAAD10 a while ago and came to the conclusion that is was too much hassle and money for very little gain. I even saw some carbon SRAM cranks that were Cannondale branded on E-Bay but when I looked into these I found there were known issues using these cranks with non SRAM components.

A.N. other bottom bracket standard. 30mm axle (bigger = stiffer) with bearings pressed into the frame (smaller Q-factor as the bearings are internal, and the bigger BB shell necessary to accommodate it all, and the bigger, fatter tubes that can now be attached to it is/are stiffer).

A marketing ploy. As most of theses things are. I don't dispute that there is a marginal benefit in additional stiffness, but no one short of Cav in a full on sprint will notice the difference. Just makes life more complicated IMHO.

And don't forget, laterally stiff but vertically compliantwink

And one more item to add to the coffee and cake post ride chat, in between strava and rapha.

If you think that's bad, you should hear the MTB brigade bang on about headtube angles. Jesus wept. So dull it hurts.

EDIT: Speaking of MTBs and BB30s, another touted advantage is that of one "standard" (ho-hum) that spans both. A "one crank fits all", thanks to the same BB widths etc, etc. Quite why you'd want to run a 39/53 on an MTB is anyones guess biggrin
