i was contacted about my T350 in the classifieds last week from a female on a gmail account. Seemed genuine at first, passed across my Reg & Vin (she said she wanted to run HPI) and some more photos, then got an email last night as follows;
Thank you for the picture. Now please tell me what is your best price. We are running our own HPI check and I would therefore be grateful if you could email me the following information:
1. Current mileage
2. V5 registration document serial number (The V5 serial number should be 2 letters followed by 7 numbers on the front page)
3. V5 registration document issue date
4. MOT certificate number
5. Is there a balance of the manufacturers warranty left?
6. when was the car last serviced and where?
7 . which dealer you purchased the car from and are you the 1st owner
receipt of purchase ,the paperwork on where and when
the car was purchased and from which company
Let me know the payment method that you will accept.
Half the stuff is on the advert and the other half just shows complete ignorance.....spectacularly annoying.

TBH, I would imagine if they were genuine, they would be heading over to view first and then HPI. I seem to recall that I did need the VIN and V5 number for a HPI I did a couple of years ago, but I had viewed the car first. However, if they actually viewed the car, checked the VIN manually and looked at the all important service history, whilst verifying your identity and address in person they would be half-way satisfied.
High value and high performance car, somebody you have never met before, Gmail, not viewed in person, requesting lots of official detail... I'd be thinking scam and possible cloaning attempt. Either that, or your car will find itself on a container ship to the far east somewhere, whilst you wait for the money transfer of 32,000 Ugandan dollars!

That sounds like a "cut & paste" generic e-mail which either means they are a dealer or it is likely to be a scam.2. V5 registration document serial number (The V5 serial number should be 2 letters followed by 7 numbers on the front page)

You don't need anything more than the reg number for an HPI check, you can do the check and then tell them the rest of the information later. The MOT cert number is not needed as you can check on VOSA to make sure it has an MOT and use ASKMID to check if the car is insured too.
I wouldn't give anyone that information until I had met them in person and even then I'd only show them the document and let them compare it to the VIN plate.
I'd be inclined to ask for their full name, address, D.O.B and landline number and then check that out before giving any more info.

Classic Scam language. Next will come the bit about sending you x-thousand dollars to cover the car and shipping fee and some extra that you keep for your trouble.Regarding HPI etc. either the MOT cert. number or or V5 ref. number allows a more detailed examination of MOT history.
