It is notoriously noob unfriendly.
I had a beta key but there was no way to really learn the game other than via youtube and even the basic guides seemed to assume some level of knowledge. There was no off-line practice mode last time I looked. I didn't even know what hero I was supposed to pick.

Recently picked this up, been playing with a mate with "bots" to get to grips with it - as mentioned, online matches can be *very* unforgiving, as your team-mates expect you to have a good understanding of the mechanics.
So Bots are the way to go with this at the start - pick a class, then learn it; click on the "book" in the top left while playing to pick a guide, it'll tell you what to buy, what skills to pick and why you're picking them. You need to learn to "last hit" to get a decent gold income.
Its a slow paced game, and teamwork is key. Can be frustrating, but rewarding too. Loads of classes to play, currently learning "Doom", "Invoker" and "Axe"

I have some gifts too.. If anyone wants one.
It is very hard to get into, and playing online you need to know 100% what you are doing.. one mis-click and you will get death threats.. honestly its so ridiculous its funny.
Also have some copies of the game (24) to give away.It is very hard to get into, and playing online you need to know 100% what you are doing.. one mis-click and you will get death threats.. honestly its so ridiculous its funny.
Just pm me your email address.
I have 45 copies of it to give away not quite sure why steam keep sending me copies to give away!
It's a game best played with friends if you know anyone else willing to play or has played before. Even just having one other person you know in your team makes it a lot better. The community generally is horrible(a bit better than the LoL community though) but there is some helpful people that pop up now and again.

Is there a demo/trial? Interested but not in a 'spending £23 on a genre I've never played before' way
If you have steam, add my brother "ipalmerfx" he has copy of the game he can gift you, it'll be the full game, no costs.3sixty said:
Received now and downloading. Thanks again jacob.
Most welcome, no doubt you'll be overwhelmed by the game at first, you'll be absolutely awful at it so I would advise checking YouTube for a basic guide on playing the game, in case you have played them, it is just like Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends. As others have mentioned, this game is extremely harsh and unfriendly towards "noobs" or beginners.
They have introduced the Bots system in an attempt to bridge the skill gaps between starters and experienced players - but imo, you can't really pick up the necessary skills required to play in a game against real players.
League of legends is much more noob-friendly and easier to pick up - it's a similar kind of game - but the graphics are shocking and intolerable to some people.

Just downloaded and installed but says its a spectator mode? I've signed up to wait for the free invite, but not sure how long that will take. I assumed the invite jacob's brother sent me was the game... didnt know we had to wait in line for an invite to actually play
ETA: Ah ignore me, I didnt redeem the voucher and its now downloading DOTA2: Test. That must be it!

Ok, I watched a 40min youtube video on the basics of the game while it downloaded. I thought I had grasped most of it, but obviously not.
I finished a game with bots which we won, but I must have died at least 20 times. I went as BatRider as it looked cool, but soon found out he has a really low damage and low health. His only real plus is his speed to move away, but even that was slow at times when stunned which resulted in many deaths
Back to the drawing board tonight.... was a good laugh and fun though!

Glad to hear your giving it a good go, if you are around later this afternoon we can play a few games together and hopefully I can help with some of the basic game play, I am new to Dota 2, but I am not new to the genre and all 3 of the main "MOBA" games, HoN, LoL and Dota are almost identical in the play style and the maps.I finished a game with bots which we won, but I must have died at least 20 times. Anyone still playing DOTA? I've just picked it up and I'm getting to grips with it. It's great fun, very complex and the learning curve is horrendous but I'm having fun so will continue to play! Through Steam, this is now a F2P game where you purchase in-game items and tournament entries, rather than the initial game.
Only played a few games so far, but playing as Drow Hunter and doing alright. She's squishy though.. Very squishy!
