Is a 9 speed cassette the same width as a 10?

Reason I ask is Wiggle say a wheel for 11 speed or 10 (with spacer) can be used for 9 speed too if you use a 1.85mm spacer. But the spacer for 10 speed is said (elsewhere) to be 1.85mm, so either Wiggle have it wrong or 9 and 10 speed must be the same width (which seems plausible because the chain went narrower from 9 to 10).

They are Dura Ace WH9000 C24s in case anyone is actually running these with a 9 speed, in which case it is a more direct answer that I can get them!

IIRC the cassettes are the same width, yes: it's the spacings between the sprockets that varies.

EDIT: No, hang on. A Shimano 9/10 hub will require a 1mm spacer as the 10sp comes up narrower. But how comes my Ultegra 6700 hubs are running a 10sp without said spacer? How comes my cassettes never come with them? I'm confused...

9 speed and 10 speed freehub bodies are the same width, however the spacing on 10 speed is narrower for obvious reasons and thus the chains are also narrower

Depends what hub you've got. It is unlikely to come off but may rattle a bit.

9/10 speed shimano cassettes are the same width overall / are interchangeable. Leastways, I'm running 10 speed cassettes on various wheels (3 different types) that were formerly 9 speed without any spacers, and the cassettes are not loose / lockrings are properly torqued down.

The spacers that go between 'loose' sprockets will be a different size as the spacing between the cogs is narrower (hence the narrower chain)

I suspect the confusion may arise because some of the cassettes have an alloy carrier which the first few sprockets are mounted to in one block e.g. the 105 5600 cassette. Because of the way the innermost sprocket mounts to that carrier, the carrier is slightly recessed thus you need a shim to place the cassette properly. The cheaper (4600?) cassette I have where all the cogs are loose does not require a spacer/shim.

I know nothing about 11 speed..
