3k is a lot of revs, I would be surprised if an air leak could do that. Must be electronic or mechanical, but you've already tried everything in my limited knowledge..

does the throttle pedal feel normal? might be the cable getting caught?

Your butterfly must be open a tad I would have thought.

Note where the air screw is and wind it in to reduce revs and see where you are and if you can lower the revs.

Vacuum hose from regulator to stepper housing off?

I'd start by checking that the throttle butterfly is closing fully. Take the hose off the plemnum and have a look. When you operate the throttle by hand (on the engine) it should make a nice metallic clunk as it returns to it's stop. Check the cable at both ends for damage and check that it slides nicely as you press the peddle, it might be frayed internally. Cheap to replace.

I believe it resets as you turn on the ignition.

When the engine is warm and it's idling nicely, disconnect the stepper electrical connector and run it for a few days like that and see if all is well.

It may be a tad harder to start as you won't have the cold start setting but I ran mine for a year like that, never better!

I'm no longer running the standard 14CUX ECU (but wish I was!) but from memory, on startup the idle speed (i.e the stepper motor bypass valve) used to run too fast i.e about 1500rpm for about 20 seconds before dropping down to a sensible idle.

You must have a problem with the butterfly valve position or an air leak. If you throttle the engine it will stop, i.e no air = no combustion!

Another slight possibility is a collapsed vacuum pipe if they run them, I really should start reading up on these engines before it bites me in the arse hehe
