On the "new frame" thread I posted a couple of pictures of my mazda MX6 "Frankenstein" project.

Thought I'd post an update as it is now up and running !!!

Bit of background -

The MX6 comes with a 2.5l V6 24v engine that is known for being a revvy little all alloy lump. The interesting bit is that is runs a Dizzy for the spark but a complex fuel injection and multi chamber inlet manifold. So, having ran one of Chester sportscars Zetec bike carb kits on a 2.0l and being very happy with it I thought I'd have a go at doing something similar for the KLDE engine and so produce a "clockwork engine" that could be installed with only a couple of wires to the battery.

Ingredients -
Maxda MX6 with inlet system stripped off
Various bit of ally tube, durafix aluminium soldering kit (interesting product and workd well with a bit of practice) for the manifold and fuel tubes
2 x Yamagha YZF600R carbs (c2001),spaced - these sit alomost vertical on the bike so similar to in this install
FSE carb 180bhp fuel pump (5psi) and syntec carb regulator (needs to run at 2psi)
Lots of luck and a small amount of engineering knowledge.

So over the past few months I have been building the bits, respacing the carbs and generally fettling. Today was the big day, blue hylomared the inlet manifolds to the head, connected up a makeshift fuel tank, connected up the fuel pump and and primed the carbs. I did not hold out too much hope as the car has not been started for 6 months over the winter and the carbs were as they came off the bike. I fixed the chokes open, put in the key and after two turns the thing came to life - miracle - a silly grin appeared on my face !!

Here are a few pics and a link to a video of it running (second start, running a bit rough as the idle is not right and needs a good engine flush as it is a bit tappety, but chuffed to bits it runs).

Video (sorry for the shoddy camera work but you get the idea)
Love the induction sound of carbs !!!

Next plans - I have to decide to carry on with the MX6 project which will need a wiring loom (standard one shot), brakes and possibly an overhaul of the rear subframe, or stick this in a kit car (will need a lot of domestic airmile to be cashed in for that), the current favouriet is to attach this to an audi transaxle and put in one of the DreramShack sandrails (see "new frame" thread), but that will have to wait a bit.

Anyway, thought this may be interesting for the kit car community as it is an easy and cheap way (car plus parts has been less than £750 !) to get a "clockwork engine" with power (once tuned should be around 180bhp+, once I have fitted the tubular header I have) and character. May even sound nice in one of Stuart Mills Replicars as there are well know methods for attaching this to an MX5 gearbox (search clairetoo).

Looks like a fun project smile

Would be interested in seeing some dyno plots from the engine once you have the manifolds installed and the carbs tuned!

I think a dyno run will be a bit away but if I get any where near 175bhp (stock 164bhp, but optimistically looking for 200bhp) at the flywheel with a fairly linear climb and a decent torque curve I'll be very happy. Need to get it running smoothly first but will keep you posted.
