Keen on being a Diplomat in UK - any guidance please?

The term 'Diplomat' covers a very broad church. At the top of the pile 'Political Diplomats' (Govenors, Ambassadors, etc) tend to be chosen from the known rather than selected from applications.
There are plenty of more basic roles that fall under this umbrella - mainly in trade and investment which is an often overlooked but critically important government function.
If you are looking at being a UK Diplomat in India, then you would be based in India working out of the British Embassy or Consulate Offices. If you are an Indian Diplomat working in the UK then the same would apply but in reverse; working out of the Indian Embassy, employed by the Indian Government.
One of the rolls of this job is to lobby / promote / leverage UK companies as and when contracts emerge in these regions in this sector and so help the UK's export figures.
I can provide several examples where we have benefited from directly and indirectly and other companies I know of having also benefited in similar ways to a level that would suggest the £120k salary is remarkably good value. This is not a political comment as we have benefited equally under this roll being governed both by Labour and the current government.

Putting aside the usual Climate Change debate, the subject itself offers a huge amount of opportunity for UK business across a wide spectrum of industry; waste management, energy, water, agriculture and so on. The money available in many low income / emerging economies is truly staggering. The vast majority of this money comes from donor organisations such as the World Bank or large companies with a vested interest in improving local infrastructure and sustainability of regions in which they operate. You would need to find a suitable post advertised on the Civil Service jobs website. If you are a civil servant then accessing this should be no problem at all.
