Front Wheel Bearings advice needed

Having just replaced both front wheel bearings with the help of a mobile mechanic mate over the weekend I have now discovered them to have play in. After a drive I removed the hubs from the car and got him to come back with his 41mm socket and 4ft extension bar and give them one more tighten. The O/S is better but the N/s still has considerable play. There was never play before, just not smooth running. Is it likely that the stub axles may also need replacing to rectify this fault?

Sometimes the bearings can be a loose fit on the stub axle and will turn on it. Bearing loctite will sort that. I would have thought the fit would have been very noticeably poor though for that to create the play.
